I want to commend you Mr. Sowell on such a well laid-out and well written article on The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 and the involvement of all the politicians, HUD and even the Department of Justice (DOJ) for playing their respective part and responsibility for such an irresponsible response to an ill-conceived out piece of legislation. I feel as though I have been yelling into the wilderness for years about this culpability. I especially appreciated your pointing out the "statistical" implication of loan approvals and quotas being imposed by HUD to meet their goals. But I was particularly taken by the facts on his referenced data on Asian Americans, as well as their successes being ignored. However, those "idiots" who conceived questionable mortgage lending with no money down, no credit worthiness, no job verification, no income verification, and whatever other "creative" lending practices they thought up, ought to be sent to prison or worse. I can especially appreciate the fact that you pointed out that this attempt at "social business" became a disaster and created under pressure in the name of the poor and the minorities. It is one thing for a program to give a hand up to those deserving, it's another thing to have a program with no criteria and just throw money at the social problem without any accountability. The mop-up of this "social disaster" and mess will be no free lunch either. There is no free. Someone always pays. In this case, it it us the hard-working taxpayer and it's not free. We all will be suffering to pay this debt off for decades to come, if not a 100 years. To those who say that trickle-down economics have not worked, I say, well neither has the great give away or welfare. It is simply "trash, dump and move on to the next great government give away." Evidently there are two governments: One that just gives money away. 2nd, we the people - the real government that just turns over our hard-earned tax money to the first for redistribution at their whim. This isn't stewardship.Yeah, that's just what we need OK, more political idiots, passing more idiotic legislation and screwing up more industries and businesses than what they already have. Our politicians are out of touch today with the constituents that they supposedly represent.Beau BowlingVeteran and Constituent
