"Michigan conservatives need to know the facts before they vote for new leadership this weekend! We see this happening all over the country now and the Tea Party is at the root of this problem. Truth hurts, but it must shine on!"
J.B. Williams

Right Side News

In a mailing to Michigan GOP delegates heading to the state GOP convention this weekend, local Tea Party Patriots leader Gene Clem opened with - “I am recommending Robert Schostak to you as the next Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party (MRP).” - calling upon fellow Michigan GOP delegates to support Schostak and his bid to become Chairman of the Michigan GOP.

Clem goes on to make a very important statement in his missive to fellow Republican Delegates – “Let me be clear: the Tea Party Movement (TPM) is not a part of the Republican Party. The TPM has many Independents and Democrats who would never join the Republican Party. The Republican Party is the chosen tool of the TPM to elect government officials. You must understand that relationship.”

The reason Clem wants to be so clear, is his candidate for head of the Michigan GOP is not Republican, or at the very least, he is certainly not a “constitutional conservative” like Clem and other Tea Party Patriots claim to desire in office.

In the 2008 election cycle, Robert “Bobby” Schostak not only gave thousands to Tea Party nemesis John McCain, he also gave generously to several key Democrats that make the list of the Tea Parties top political targets…

                Nancy Pelosi (D) California

                John Kerry (D) Massachusetts

                Frank Lautenberg (D) New Jersey

                Mark Udall (D) Colorado

                Jack Reed (D) Rhode Island

According to all known Tea Party propaganda over the last two years, the Tea Party is for smaller government, fiscal responsibility, secure borders and constitutional conservative principles and values. On this basis, why would “conservative” organizations like Tea Party Patriots and icaucus support a GOP leader who supported known hardcore leftists like Pelosi and Kerry in the last election cycle?

The answer might be easier than you think. From 2008 thru 2010, Schostak also gave tens of thousands to the fledgling Michigan Republican Party, greasing the path for his bid to take control of the Michigan State Republican Party.

From a February 2009 Michigan Republican Party press release – “Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser announced the appointment of Robert Schostak as the party's new finance chairman. Schostak has an extensive background in campaign fundraising strategies, previously assisting United States Senator Spencer Abraham, Gubernatorial Candidate Dick DeVos, and 2008 Presidential Candidate John McCain.”

Schostak’s campaign giving pattern is that of a politico buying a seat at the big boy table, spreading his wealth around both political parties as he searches for a way in the door of party power somewhere. I get what he’s doing and why… but why would this type of individual draw the endorsement and support of Tea Party Patriots and sister organization Freedom Works, or constitutionally conservative candidate vetting group icaucus?

Why would a Tea Party organizer like Gene Clem work so hard to support a GOP Chairman that supported Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and John McCain in 2008?

“We are two concerned citizens who have given two years of our lives to the current struggle for the restoration of our republic. I am proud to march at Bobby's side for the next two-year fight.” - Said Clem, in closing his campaign pitch for Schostak.

Last December, Tea Party Express darling, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann was in Michigan offering up her special brand of political rhetoric. Bachmann was in the state to stump for Robert ‘Bobby’ Schostak and his bid to become the chair of the Michigan Republican Party.

So, let me see… Schostak was hand-picked by new Governor Snyder? – and…

Southwest Michigan Tea Party Patriots, Tea Party Express, Freedom Works, icaucus, Gene Clem and Michelle Bachmann all support Robert “Bobby” Schostak for Chairman of the Michigan GOP, who supported Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and John McCain in 2008?

Seems at least some real Michigan conservatives find this a bit odd as well – “Now that Michigan has a choice for the GOP chairman position, I would like to ask everyone who might be voting at the Michigan GOP convention on Friday, to support Troy Rolling. He’s not part of the existing Michigan GOP party and that, my friends, is his BEST ASSET. Let me tell you a few things about the current powers-that-be in the Michigan GOP.” states – “The biggest complaint that people talk about are Schostak's connections to Democrats like Al Gore, John Kerry, Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow and Jennifer Granholm.” This is a race for leader of the GOP, isn’t it?

My how the stomach turns inside today’s political Tea Party wrestling match for power. Funny what money can buy, huh?

As Gene Clem said in closing his pitch for Democratic Socialist financier Schostak, – “Do your own research. Take any opportunity you may have to speak to Bobby and make your choice based the best information available and your knowledge of the man.”

Get to know your fellow Tea Partiers a little better too… a Republican Party of non-republicans… hmmm, only a Democrat would have come up with that!

Col. Riley, does anyone really know if Gene Clem is a so called Tea Party leader or is he like so many others self appointed. You are right on about what the Tea Party Movement is really about. Limited government, constitutional conservatism and the Founding Fathers vision of the United States of America. Just think of all we have already done. Did anyone believe 3 years ago that there would be a Tea Party caucus in both the US House and Senate. That a completely unorganized movement would shift the US House so far to the right and almost take the Senate too. We did all of that without the support of the Republican party who in some cases worked against our conservative choices, ie Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell. You all better understand that the Republican establishment considers us the enemy. The RINO's hate us and our message. They will do everything they can to marginalize We The People and our message. The Republican zebras will paint away their stripes but they are still there. They have been bought and paid for many years ago and will not give up their power without a fight. Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing. Know your Republican Reps and Senators, look up their records and you will find the truth.
While watching O'Reilly on FOX tonight, Laura Ingrahm called Megan McCain and Karl Rove rinos of the worst kind. She also said they are losing support in Republican Party. She stated that the McCains and Roves are scared to death of the Tea Party movement and will do all they can to discredit it and all who are involved with us. The interview shocked O'Reilly and he questioned her if she really believed that. At least someone in the media is telling the truth. I only hope Ingrahm isn't just jumping on the band wagon but truly believes our message. Suck on that Gene Clem

Mr. Harrington, you asked me, Miss darlene,  Do you know Mr. Gene Clem?  Do you approve of him talking for the tea Party of Michigan? and do you approve of him using the database base of the state GOP to do so?

I do not personally know Gene Clem but I have been involved in a discussion with him before.  Gene Clem talks for himself and those who say he speaks for them; he does not speak for me.  He does have a position of power within the loose tea party arrangements in Michigan.  Even for those who are unhappy with Clem, we/they are not going to throw it all away because of this one endorsement... we will see over time.  I have no clue about any state GOP database and wonder how Clem even got it.  Clem is NOT of the so called "fake tea party"!  That was linked to some Democratic operatives.  Clem is not that.

My main group, where I volunteer much time, is iCaucus and it is NOT a tea party.  I do belong to a tea party too, and that is The Tea Party of West Michigan.  I can tell you that I know for sure that iCaucus did NOT endorse anybody for the MI GOP leadership, nor did the Tea Party of West Michigan.  We did have discussions (both at iCaucus and the TPofWMI) about the various candidates.  In fact, we discussed Schostak's contributions.  Many of us, probably Don included, voiced opinions.  Opinions and discussions do not constitute an endorsement.

I have no idea what your problem is with Steve Mobley.  I personally know Steve, and I don't even know what you are talking about.  If you mean he used some GOP resources, like phone calls, well good!  If you mean he is trying to take over the GOP from the inside, good again.  I am doing that too!

For those of you who want third parties, where are you going to get the money?  I did an estimate of what Senator Debbie Stabenow will probably spend for her 2012 campaign: $20 to $25 MILLION.

One more thing, Mr. Harrington... Just because someone does not agree with you, does not make him/her less of a patriot.  There are times when someone less than "perfect" is supported because the alternative is so very bad.  This is why finding good candidates to run in the primary is so important (which is what we try to do at iCaucus).  Will we ever make a mistake?  Probably; after all, we are vetting hundreds of candidates.  If this happens, will we try to correct it?  Yes!

BTW, you can call me Dar.

Great write Mr. Williams and Mr. Harrington.

I am a life-long Michigander, an Independence Caucus member and a Republican Precinct Delegate who just returned home from our state convention.  I feel you are painting people with a very broad brush.   We need to understand that we will never agree on every issue nor find the perfect candidate.  We will also not change the conservative landscape overnight.  We must set our sights on our eventual goal, never drop our gaze and use whatever means we have at our disposal to make steady progress on our journey.

For the record, I did not support Mr. Schostak for chair, but Mr. Rollings dropped out of the race so Bobbie Schostak won today.  I too was disgusted when I learned of Mr. Schostak's campaign contributions.  But I asked him about them.  Did any of you?  Did you take into account what he did for the Republican Party in Michigan for the 2010 election?  He started fighting back against the dems BEFORE the tea parties got started, before the rebirth of the conservative movement made it popular.  He put his personal business on hold to fundraise full-time for the party, at a time when Michigan was a decidely blue state.  He raised a record amount of money for the Michigan GOP during the worst recession since the 1930's.  The GOP took every statewide election in 2010, regained control of the Michigan House of Reps and garnered a super majority in the Michigan Senate.  We added 2 GOP representatives to our congressional delegation.  Yes, this was a time when Republicans were expected to win.  But these accomplishments exceeded anyone's expectations for Michigan.  And many, many of these new representatives are true conservatives.  Do I really care if RINOs helped elect them?

Do I like Bobby Schostak?  Not really.  Do I trust Bobby Schostak?  Not really.  But it takes money to win elections.  We face a hard senatorial election here in 2012.  We want Michigan to assist in ensuring Barack Obama is a one term president.  Not everyone can raise money.  But many of us can watch over those who can.  We have many good people who have joined the Republican Party.  Many of us have gotten on our Executive Committees.  Many of us are going to conventions and making our voices heard.

We can rail against pay to play politics or we can do something about it. We can't do anything about it when we are out of power.  We also can't do anything about it when we are on the outside looking in.  I intend to get up close and personal with Bobby Schostak and the party elite.  If you think that makes me a neo-con or worse, so be it.  But I am a pragmatist and we need to start working on 2012 now.  I am not going to waste valuable time and energy on in-fighting.  I am going to do everything in my power to harness the power of the GOP to meet the overall goals.  If we have to drag them kicking and screaming, the party will return to its constitutional roots here in Michigan.  But we can't do it in a day.  And we can't do it without money.  Until the sheep in this country wake up, we need to spoon feed them in very expensive sound bites.

I will watch like a hawk, but I am willing to give Bobby Schostak a chance.

"Until the sheep in this country wake up, we need to spoon feed them in very expensive sound bites."   What the heck does that mean? Does calling everyone in America a farm animal make you feel smarter?  I would never, under any circumstance, call the American public sheep.  That's just bad.Period.

With all due respect,,,,,,, That is exactly why there is no conservitism in the republican party.  Folks have been giving it away in many states.  There is a differance between being a conservitive and a republican these days.

You do not like him,,You do not trust him, but for money you hand your state to the opposing party.  Michigan is looking more like Massachusetts. I wish you all well.

The opposition that left the race prior to the vote was no accident,

Excellent post, Jennifer!

You all can post here and complain all day, but WHAT ARE YOU DOING?  Have you found a good conservative candidate to run in the primary, one who meets all of your standards?  If so, are you out raising money, lots and lots of money?  Are you attempting to educate the sheep - yes, the sheep - outside of your conservative groups?  If not, I can't take your complaints seriously.

I wish, and I'm sure Jennifer wishes, that all were perfect in MI, but it's not.  We have come part way, but we still have a long way to go.  Like Jennifer, I became a precinct delegate, not to go along with the "good ol' boy" Republicans, but to take over the party.  We can't do it in one election.  Some times we have to do the best we can with what we've got.

Mr. Harrington, you are in Massachusetts.  What are your plans to get that state in shape?  Can we do it by 2012?

Number ONE - the people in Michigan are NOT stupid.  Number two - if a member of your family gives to the socialist, communist, democrats, etc does that make you a contributor even if you did not contribute?  From all the information that was given to me by those who know more and better then I do is that Bobby Schostak did not make contributions to nanny pelousy or jumping john kurky, members of his family did.  Thirdly, mcpain was the lesser of the two evils.  While you may not be happy with Schostak, I accept the answers I was given.  Remember the left and the incompetent damocrapts want to cause division and sow seeds of distrust among us do not let that happen!!!!!  We have less then two years now to get our marching orders straight and it is not calling others among us stupid if you do not think they are doing as you think they should.  Who would you have voted for?????  Most voters in each state know who the best picks are.  Yes there are times that people are fooled, for instant Scott Brown from the liberal, liberal, progressively sick state of Massahatchsetts.  We have lots of work ahead to get obozo out and tried for fraud along with the accomplices.  Let's move on with a plan and get our boots on the ground!!!!!!
