Couple met and married within a month and stayed together for 65 years... only to be parted after home invader beat wife to death

An 85-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and battered to death by a home invader who also shot her 90-year-old husband in the face with a BB gun.

Nancy and Bob Strait, who had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in December, were discovered by their daughter at their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Both the pensioners were rushed to hospital where Mrs Strait, who was nearly blind, died from her injuries.

Mr Strait, who served in the 101st Airborne Division in World War II, suffered a broken jaw, broken ribs and severe bleeding. He is in a serious condition in hospital.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Tyrone Dale David Woodfork in connection with the case.

The Straits' distraught family today paid tribute to the pair, who grew up in poverty in rural Oklahoma during the Great Depression.

They met each other on a blind date on Thanksgiving 1946, married a month later and went on to have six children, 18 grandchildren and about 50 great and great-great grandchildren. They had recently welcomed a great-great-great grandchild.

Their daughters Lanora and Andra told Tulsa World that the couple were loving and generous people who would do anything for anyone.

'Dad never talked, and Mama never quit talking,' Lanora said.

'Whatever she did, it came from the heart,' Andra added.

The pair could be found sitting on their porch singing and playing the guitar during warmer summer evenings.

Mr Strait, who had worked for the oil derrick supply company Lee C. Moore before retirement, enjoyed woodwork while his wife loved making quilts and baking.

They had both been struggling with health problems before the attack. Mr Strait had been diagnosed with a terminal kidney illness but had outlived the doctor's prognosis.

'He was living because Mother was alive,' Andra told Tulsa World.

The couple had had food poisoning the week before the attack.

'There is no one else who has been through what he's been through who is still alive,' Lanora said of her father.

'We pray he doesn't remember.'

Tulsa police believe burglars broke into the Straits' home either late Tuesday or early Wednesday last week. They were not found until the Wednesday evening.

The home invaders made off with their Dodge Neon, a television and $200.

Woodfork was later found hiding in a nearby house after a witness spotted the stolen vehicle being driven down the road.

He is being held at Tulsa Jail without bail accused of first-degree murder, burglary, assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of armed robbery.

'This investigation is far from over,' Officer Jason Willingham of the Tulsa police department told Tulsa World. 'We've still got a lot of questions that we still need answered.'

Mrs Strait's funeral will be on Friday. The family has set up a fund the Nancy Strait and Bob Strait Support Trust to help pay for the service and her husband's medical care.

My heart goes out to the Straight family, as it does to countless such victims everywhere, the ever increasing rate of hate crimes is part of The Demoralization… but let’s see, who is it that keeps covering Crosses wherever "he" or should I say IT goes, with a list of crimes from coast to coast and documentation to prove it!… where is the vampire police?! or do they just catch the financially unsupported freaks, dummies and scapegoats as always?!

I agree with Clois!  No taxes to support the scumbag if he even get's prosecuted. He's the type obummer would have holder not allow ANYONE  to prosecute!  They'd blame the couple for being home -- after all, if they weren't home they'd not get hurt.  Not the scumbag's fault!!  I'm so mad!!  Does OK have the death penalty?  If not anyone know a good sniper who can hit his target from way off when and if they go to transport him? 

I had a niece murdered in 1985, along with twin 2 yr old's she was babysitting.  They were murdered in KS, but their murderer is in prison -- last I knew close to Lawton, OK.  Poor guy couldn't serve 6 consecutive life sentences (3 for murder and 3 for kidnapping) in Ks -- death threats against him by other inmates for being a baby killer.  Got to protect the murderers!

The Wichita newspaper wrote a piece on him quite a few yrs ago, saying he was a "model prisoner" makes floral arrangements and donates them to local nursing homes down there.  Prison even allowed him to write to my sister after my brother-in-law passed away, telling her he'd been saved, and he was praying for her, and he wanted her forgiveness so he could someday see her in Heaven, causeIF SHE DIDN'T FORGIVE HIM she'd not get to go to Heaven!!!

They say when someone like this guy in the article, or the one who murdered my niece, Tammey Elizabeth Mooney (RIP Tammey) get tried and convicted that you get closure!  None of my family got closure!! All these years later, there's no closure.  Tammey and the twins are still dead.  He's alive with free EVERYTHING, and our family help pay for his support for the rest of his life, or until they say this "model prisoner" has reformed and gets parole.  He's come up for parole, already a couple of times,  just not got it YET!!!

Where is Obama on this one?  A clear case of murder and mayhem that doesn't fit his opportunity of pandering to the left.  The left-wing media has been blowing the Florida killing of a black man totally without facts.  Obama jumped out and said "If I had a son he would look like Travon" reflecting a youthful picture not current......well Travon may look like his death was caused by an act of self-defense?  How will the left-wing media cover to Obama?  I doubt the MSM will touch the Strait story, certainly not to the extent of the Florida issue...can't pander to a white family killed by a black person.

This is yet another example of why every homeonwer should have a dog and a gun.  If the vet had kept his gun handy (and if he is a vet he certainly knows how to use one) he could have shot the worthless thug.  A dog would have given clear warning.

Since the criminal is from a so-called "disadvantaged" group he will probably be allowed to get away with a light penalty because he came from a "bad environment" or some such nonsense.   Does Oklahoma still have the death penalty?  I certainly hope so!

And what excuse will Obama and Eric Holder make for this tragedy?

THIS IS WHY WE MUST HAVE THE DEATH PENALTY.  IF WE CONTINUE TO CODDLE THESE CRIMINALS WE WILL ALWAYS BE HARRASSED AND LIVE IN FEAR.  OBAMA WANTS TO TAKE OUR WEAPONS AWAY.  WITH WEAPONS WE HAVE A CHANCE TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THESE KINDS OF CRIMINALS.  THE CRIMINALS HAVE RESOURSES TO OBTAIN ILLEGAL WEAPONS, WHERE THE ORDINARY PERSON HAS TO OBTAIN GUNS BY PURCHASING THEM THROUGH A LEGAL PARTY AND WE MUST SIGN PAPERS AND WAIT.  ALL THE STATES THAT APPROVE OF THE RIGHT TO CARRY HAVE LESS CRIME THAN THE STATES THAT DO NOT APPROVE OF THIS.

IN TODAYS SOCIETY WE NEED TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR FAMILIES FROM DRUG DEALERS, ROBBERIES, THUGS, AND THE ILLEGAL TRAFFICING OF WEAPONS TO THE WRONG PEOPLE.
