Today, the Journal News in upstate New York, owned by Gannett, published the names and addresses of all gun permit holders in the Westchester and Rockland county areas of New York. The Journal News said:
The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.
The newspaper didn’t even feel it necessary to publish a rationale for that violation of privacy – publishing the names and addresses of gun owners makes them more vulnerable to robbery when they aren’t at home, since criminals will know where the guns are.
They did, however, run a piece targeting gun owners as the root of all evil:
In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and amid renewed nationwide calls for stronger gun control, some Lower Hudson Valley residents would like lawmakers to expand the amount of information the public can find out about gun owners. About 44,000 people in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam — one out of every 23 adults — is licensed to own a handgun.
They did stump for the public to be able to see “permits an individual has been issued, the types of handguns a person possesses or the number of guns he or she owns – whether one or a dozen.”

On the brighter side, I got steamrolled by our local Barney Fife Brigade in 2007. Ever since this happened and they plastered photos of me & most of my firearms and ammunition in the newspaper, people no longer stop for directions or gas!
They plan on putting out all of the information of those that own weapons. So which way is this going to go, criminals breaking in to homes in hopes of getting away with a few new firearms while NOT getting shot, or now having the address to all the known homes that do not have a means of protection inside them to defend themselves with, having a new rash of break ins? These idiots create more problems every day for the Law abiding citizens and are to damn dense to know they do so.
Now all the gangs and crooks can go and rob the homes and get free guns with no background... They either go armed in their homes or stand on the street and give their guns away... thats our government doing what it always does and thats working for the crooks....
Folks, I think that a class-action law suit by the non-gun owners, who are now being targeted by New York armed gangs and individual thugs as "easy marks", should be initiated against that idiotic newspaper that published the list of gun-owner names at the first opportunity; what say ye? If this goes unchallenged, it will be a signal to other bleeding-heart newspaper editors that it's alright to publish citizens' names without prior authorization. TO ARMS!!
I think this is good for folks with CHL license but not so good for the folks who do not have their license...this could back fire on them.
On second thought, you're right, Patricia: perhaps the ENTIRE COMMUNITY, armed and unarmed, should partake in the class-action suit. Thanks for your input.
I agree with you Herbert. All citizens should get involved but will they? I'm from Texas; if they posted our state you would see many more dots on the map but there are many who have guns without a CHL, they don't want the government in their business. Let the criminals and white house underestimate Americans at there own peril.
Patricia, I know another Texan, and so far you've both got everyone in this country beaten! Keep up the great work. As far as all citizens getting involved in this New York fiasco...no, I doubt that very much, at least as far as those Westchester and Rockland County, NY folks go. I'm a displaced New Yorker, having left the city back in 1951 to enter military service. I know the mentality of those folks: 'if it doesn't affect me, leave me alone!' I hope that I'm wrong, but have my doubts. I know some folks from back there, and that's their mentality, sad to say. What's the latest on Texas pulling out of the Union?
Last I heard, Ross, rifles & shotguns are not a registered firearm....but those German Shepards are decent insurance policies.
