The Los Angeles City Council has declared every Monday to be a so-called 'meatless Monday,' and is urging all residents to participate in the weekly day of vegetarianism.
NBC Los Angeles reports that with the vote Los Angeles has become the largest city to embrace the Meatless Monday campaign, a nonprofit with the goal of cutting down on meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.
Neither city officials nor law enforcement will be allowed to force residents to not eat meat, The Los Angeles Daily News reports. Rather, the resolution is meant to encourage residents to not eat meat once a week in the hopes of starting a city-wide trend.
Councilwoman Jan Perry, who has pushed for a ban on new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles, said the resolution is part of an overall "good food" agenda for the city.
"We can reduce saturated fats and reduce the risk of heart disease by 19 percent," Perry said according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "While this is a symbolic gesture, it is asking people to think about the food choices they make. Eating less meat can reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses."

I'm so tired of these people who think they're better than all the rest of us, telling us what we can or cannot eat, drink, or smoke and oh yes - telling us when we can or cannot do it.
Because of the price my Mon, Wed, and Fri are also meatless. So There!!
Unbelieveable, You devil Dave, there's ` Turkey', chicken, pork, ham, game-hen & cow-tounge, liver, that are prefectly healthy for US.. You go ahead and eat to die..!!
I remember during WW II we had meatless days but for another reason.
They never stop.
Good if they stop eating meat it means more for the rest of us LOL...... And I think they should NOT allow anymore restaurants in LA since they don't want so called fast food restaurants. So there I say just close them all down in LA and that way they will not have it to worry.
Can't do that, you would have no place for all the illegals to work.
Catholics have not been eating meat' on Fridays for many many years, did they do a study on their heart disease rate??? Just wondering where they came up with 19% reduced risk...??? AND do the Catholics have less of and have had reverses in their most common illnesses??? JUST CURIOUS !!! I was raised Cath...maybe why I am healthy for my age???
The very best thing that can be done for the reasons they state is to get off their lazy butts and do some physical labor. The greatest good for the entire nation California could do is shut down Hollywood and the video game makers in the valley.
