Instructions
- 1
Poke up to six holes in the bottom of one of the cups with the awl. Arrange the holes in a circle, spacing them about ½ inch apart.
- 2
Fold your cotton handkerchief in half widthwise, then lengthwise so you have a square of cotton fabric. Tuck it into the bottom of your cup, flattening the cloth against the bottom and sides.
- 3
Fill the cup about half full of sand. The sand will capture small particles in your water. Fill the cup to the top with gravel. The gravel will filter out large pieces of dirt and contaminants.
- 4
Place the first cup inside the second cup. The cups should fit together so the bottom of the first cup sits about an inch away from the bottom of the second cup. Cups with wide lips around the top edge work well.
- 5
Pour the dirty water into the top cup. The water should drip out of the bottom of the first cup and into the second. The water should be clear.

I added chapter 6 from the U.S. Army Field Manual 21-76, U.S. Army Survival Manual.

"Life Straw" is a very handy personal water filtration device. Each filters up to 1000 liters of water. I have several in my Buggout bag, and I have given them to family and friends for just in case.

I bought mine on Ebay for around $20.00 each.
They also have a larger system.
Thanks for the tip!
