Police are trying to find those responsible for spray painting the Iwo Jima memorial at the front gate of Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Military officials say the vandalism, a bright pink paint line around about half of the memorial's base, happened Tuesday evening. Military police along with Prince William County police searched the area but did not find any suspects.
"Base officials are consulting with monument specialists in the National Capital Region on the best way to remove the paint without damaging the stone base upon which the monument sits," Marine officials said in a press release.
The vandalism remains under investigation.

On a lighter note, the obstacle course at Quantico is known as "The Great Crippler of Young Americans".
I spent three tours there several generations ago and I can tell you I know of no one that was ever crippled by that obstacle course.....or the one that existed when I was there...or any other while I am at it including the one I loved to run at MCRD San Diego more years ago than I can hardly remember although I have not forgotten a single part of that course in all this time....Oh lord please let me have just one do over.....Semper Fi.....either that or five minutes with that punk that spray painted the monument.......
They need to put one of those spy cameras out there! The govt. is spying on us all, so surely they can spy on the monument! Find the cowards that did this and send them to war in Afghanistan!!!! Make sure their weapons malfunction!
