Republican congressional candidate says violent overthrow of government is 'on the table'

I was going to wait until after the elections to start this important conversation that we need to have, but now is a important time to have it.

WASHINGTON – Republican congressional candidate Stephen Broden stunned his party Thursday, saying he would not rule out violent overthrow of the government if elections did not produce a change in leadership.

In a rambling exchange during a TV interview, Broden, a South Dallas pastor, said a violent uprising "is not the first option," but it is "on the table." That drew a quick denunciation from the head of the Dallas County GOP, who called the remarks "inappropriate."

Broden, a first-time candidate, is challenging veteran incumbent Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson in Dallas' heavily Democratic 30th Congressional District. Johnson's campaign declined to comment on Broden.

In the interview, Brad Watson, political reporter for WFAA-TV (Channel 8), asked Broden about a tea party event last year in Fort Worth in which he described the nation's government as tyrannical.

"We have a constitutional remedy," Broden said then. "And the Framers say if that don't work, revolution." Watson asked if his definition of revolution included violent overthrow of the government. In a prolonged back-and-forth, Broden at first declined to explicitly address insurrection, saying the first way to deal with a repressive government is to "alter it or abolish it."

"If the government is not producing the results or has become destructive to the ends of our liberties, we have a right to get rid of that government and to get rid of it by any means necessary," Broden said, adding the nation was founded on a violent revolt against Britain's King George III.

Watson asked if violence would be in option in 2010, under the current government. "The option is on the table. I don't think that we should remove anything from the table as it relates to our liberties and our freedoms," Broden said, without elaborating. "However, it is not the first option."

Reactions

Jonathan Neerman, head of the Dallas County Republican Party, said he's never heard Broden or other local Republican candidates advocate violence against the government.

"It is a disappointing, isolated incident," Neerman said. He said he plans to discuss the matter with Broden's campaign. Ken Emanuelson, a Broden supporter and leading tea party organizer in Dallas, said he did not disagree with the "philosophical point" that people had the right to resist a tyrannical government. But, he said, "Do I see our government today anywhere close to that point? No, I don't."

Emanuelson said he's occasionally heard people call for direct action against the government, but that they typically do not get involved in electoral politics.

That Broden is "engaged in the election and running for office shows he's got faith in the system as it is," Emanuelson said.

Other statements Also in the interview, Broden backed away from other controversial statements he has made at rallies and on cable news appearances. In
June 2009, he described the economic crash in the housing, banking and automotive industries as "contrived" and a "set up" by the Obama
administration.

Asked Thursday about the validity of these, Broden said they were "authentic crises facing this nation." Broden also retreated from other remarks last year that chided Americans for not being more outraged over government intrusion, comparing them to Jews "walking into the furnaces" under the Nazi regime in Germany.

"They are our enemies, and we must resist them," he said of government leaders. Broden said Thursday that he wasn't trying to compare President Barack Obama to Hitler and he mistakenly linked the U.S. in 2010 to Nazi Germany.

In the uphill campaign against Johnson, Broden has sought to capitalize on her misuse of scholarship funds from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a nonprofit entity.

In late August, The Dallas Morning News reported that Johnson provided 23 scholarships over five years to two of her grandsons, two children of her nephew, and two children of her top aide in Dallas. None of those recipients were eligible under the foundation's anti-nepotism rules or residency requirements. She has repaid the foundation more than $31,000.

A lot of Texans have been bandying secession around again, and frankly I encouraged my state legislators and Governor Brewer to consider that also, some months ago, in the sense of preparing for it, in the event nullification, which they are doing quite heavily, should fail. Between the laws they've passed this past couple of years and the propositions on our current ballots dealing with nullification, I sincerely hope they are seriously considering the possibility of secession too, and would consider allying with Texas in the doing. But, I too, fear the nation is now too divided, and with the current administration NO amount of reconciliation is likely to even be presented,. much less possible. Neither do I hold out much in the way of hopes for this election to change that situation. I'm more than a little afraid we'll find we have a bunch of Scott Browns in the wings here. I also understand where MAJ Worn is coming from, and fear, as much as I hate to admit it, he may well be correct. In which case secession MIGHT salvage something, if the states' leaderships aren't too chicken to go through with it!

You're right. We are at the point now where that is shaping up to be the only option left to us. This unConstitutional business of having the 9th circuit court adjudicating against AZ laws where it has NO jurisdictional authority is really beyond ridiculous; the latest is telling us we can't require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote! So Obama's GOT his illegals' votes without the amnesty! It's positively disgusting. I don't know what this place IS, but it's NOT the America I served and grew up in, or that all my forebears served either!

I am, and we do have some very fine sheriffs here.  I'm not so sure about Gov. Brewer this past few months; something's changed there, and I'm not near enough to Phoenix to know exactly what.  But I'd definitely like to see alliance with TX should the course for secession be taken.  OK and NM seem to be moving more in that direction than they had been as well.UT and CO, unfortunately, no; they'd have to go with CA and probably NV as well.

Unfortunately, while we are at it, get the UN OUT of NEW YORK, make them get on a boat or airplanes and get them and any other progressives OUT and that includes illegals, Islamist, Marxist, Socialist, well you get the picture, then we don't have to worry about breaking up the United States. Do the same for every state in the union. Restore this UNION to a REPUBLIC, not a Democracy... Robert you are calling for blood in the streets here on your own. PFA is not calling for "Destroying the Government" right now. We do have constitutional tools to use before we get to that point! I have questions for you.

1. Are you campaigning for a constitutional conservative?

2. Are you a precinct chairman?

3. Do you go to meetings to help in your community?

4. Are you running for office?

5. Are you poll watching?

6. Are you teaching the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and your own state constitution to people in your community ?

7. What are you doing besides calling for blood in the streets right now?

I know just like everyone here knows, that the Federal Gov. is out of control! Everyone here wants the Fraud n chief to be charged for his crimes. Everyone wants the corruption in our government all over our country and communities dealt with. Deal with it! Get out in your community and get to work. Expose the corruption in your community! Put boots on the ground. Then we won't have to endure the bloodfest your calling for. There may come a time for that and it may be soon, BUT, it is only right that we use every single constitutional tool before going the blood-filled, kill them all route. Many men, women and children have already paid with their lives for you to have the honored privilege to have Constitutional tools to prevent a bloodfest!

Remember there will be many on both sides die in a damn war you are calling for. War is the last tool we use, it is not something that is lightly used by angered folks who chose to not use self control .

This was posted back in Oct 2010.  We had an election. GOP got control of the House -- what good has it done?  The FRAUD in the WH is still getting his way!!! With the GOP controlling the House, these bills they are passing should NEVER GET PASSED!!! They give in at every turn, none of them has and BA__S to stand up -- at least the majority of it don't!! AND THE MAJORITY OF THE HOUSE ARE REPUBLICANS -- OR DEMOCRATS IN DISGUISE!!! HOW MUCH DO WE PUT UP WITH? HOW LONG DO WE KEEP ALLOWING THIS?  Until the "next" election, or the "next" one ?  You sure we'll have a "next" election? I'm not!!!

I will be going to Harrisburg March 1 things are starting to move real fast now it isn't what we're going to do its what were going to allow them to do or how much farther can we let them push us things are really bad for the elderly right now to see what's going on around. Here is sad this commander-in-chief is not going to be stopped by words I prayed to God that it be so but I cannot do any more than I have done or are doing people losing their homes are not taking their medicine they cannot afford it were coming to the end of the line now but they keep pushing and taken I will not allow very much more I keep thinking of the Jewish people being led away then I would think it not going to Get that bad how bad do we have to let it get just till we eat every other day maybe and at that point who will decide and will we have any tools left God bless the United States of America
