Election 2010: South Carolina Governor
South Carolina Governor: Haley (R) 49%, Sheheen (D) 35%
Monday, August 02, 2010 Email to a Friend ShareThis.Advertisement
Republican Nikki Haley continues to hold a double-digit lead over Democratic State Senator Vincent Sheheen in South Carolina’s race for governor.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state shows Haley with 49% support. Sheheen picks up 35% of the vote. Four percent (4%) like another candidate in the race, and 12% remain undecided.

Both candidates have less support this month than they did a month ago.

Haley, a state legislator, captures 82% of the GOP vote, while Sheheen earns just 68% of Democrats. Voters not affiliated with either party prefer the Republican by a 48% to 34% margin.

Only seven percent (7%) of voters in South Carolina describe the economy as good. Fifty-nine percent (59%) say it’s poor. Twenty-two percent (22%) believe the economy is getting better, but 47% say it’s getting worse.

Sheheen picks up 68% support from voters who say the economy is getting better. Haley gets identical support (68%) from those who believe it is getting worse.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of voters in the state say the United States is in a recession.

Thirty-three percent (33%) rate their personal finances as good or excellent, but 20% say their finances are poor. Seventeen percent (17%) think their own finances are getting better, while 44% say they are worsening.

(Want a free daily e-mail update ? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The survey of 500 Likely Voters in South Carolina was conducted on July 29, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Sixty-one percent (61%) of South Carolina voters favor repeal of the national health care bill, while 34% are opposed. This includes 52% who Strongly Favor repeal and 25% who Strongly Oppose it. This is even higher support for repeal than is found nationally.

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters in the state favor passage of an immigration law like Arizona’s in South Carolina, similar to support nationally. Twenty percent (20%) oppose such a law.

By a two-to-one margin, South Carolina voters disagree with the U.S. Justice Department’s decision to challenge the Arizona law in federal court.

Sixty percent (60%) say a child born in this country to a mother who is an illegal immigrant should not automatically become a U.S. citizen, as is currently the law.

Twenty-eight percent (28%) of all voters in South Carolina now hold a Very Favorable opinion of Haley, down slightly from the previous survey. Twelve percent (12%) view her Very Unfavorably.

Sheheen is viewed Very Favorably by 24% and Very Unfavorably by 15%.

At this point in a campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the number of people with a strong opinion more significant than the total favorable/unfavorable numbers.

Forty percent (40%) now approve of the job President Obama is doing, while 58% disapprove of his performance. This is higher disapproval than Obama earns nationally in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

Forty-six percent (46%) approve of Sanford’s job performance as governor, but 50% disapprove.

Lindsey Graham: Portrait Of A Principled Idiot

By J.J. Jackson Saturday, July 24, 2010

I really did not want to write a second article in a one month about Senator Lindsey Graham considering he is from South Carolina and I am from Pennsylvania. But I must. He is forcing my hand.

I have got to hand it to the Senator. He certainly is principled. Sitting in his seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Graham decided to vote in favor of moving the nomination of Elena Kagan, President Obama’s latest nominee to the United States Supreme Court, out of committee. Senator Graham says that elections have consequences and this is why he crossed over and voted with the Democrats. Thus, in his mind, he is saying that because President Obama is sitting in the White House The President should get his nominee.

But while being principled he is also an idiot. He is an idiot because he is ignoring the fact that he was also elected. And he was elected by a constituency that vehemently opposes another left wing radical being placed upon the Supreme Court. His excuse to vote for Kagan is nothing more than the ramblings of an ill mind that is looking for justification to do something he wants to do anyway. Because if he really believed what he said about the consequences of elections he would be telling Obama that his constituents elected him to stand in the way of the further leftward march of America.

But he is not doing this because he does not really believe in his own excuse.

Senator Graham even said that there were, “100 reasons,” for him to vote against this nominee. But he tosses those, “100 reasons,” out the window because he wants to further Kagan’s nomination and get her seated upon the Supreme Court. There is, to be blunt, no other reason for his action.

Most people would say if there is one reason for something with 100 reasons against doing that thing that the 100 reasons would outweigh the one and the action in question would not be taken. Not Senator Graham though.

Yes, Mr. Graham, elections do have consequences. You, for example, were elected to the United States Senate. The United States Senate is tasked with the role of advice and consent over the President’s judicial nominees. That role was given to the Senate to ensure that a President would not appoint unqualified persons to the bench. The scope of who these unqualified persons are ranges widely from a President’s own relatives with no judicial experience to someone who is mentally incompetent to a wacko who could not care less about the United States Constitution, upholding limited government and keeping the Congress and the President in check.

The election of Senator Graham to a role in the Senate where he is supposed to act as a check and a balance is apparently not a consequential event if we are to believe the Senator’s own words and compare them with his actions. To Senator Graham the only election that matters in this case is the election of President Obama. To me this seems very convenient for the Senator and very inconvenient for America. Does this now mean that Lindsey Graham will support any law in Congress that President Obama supports? After all, elections have consequences, right, Senator?

Saying you are being principled is one thing. But getting tied up in knots so as to only selectively apply the principles you claim to hold dear makes you a principled idiot. What Mr. Graham is showing is that even a fool can have the courage of his wrongly conceived convictions.

He is the truth. And it is a truth that needs to be impressed upon Senator Graham.

Elena Kagan was nominated by President Obama because he sees her as someone that will help further his goals. President Obama’s goals are to strip us further of our liberties, act in an extra constitutional manner and turn America into a land where top down government control is the norm of our existence. I know, I know, liberals protest at such a blunt portrayal of what they believe in. They will swear that such is not the case. But tell me honestly, has anything that they have done proven that my description is not accurate? No.

Ms. Kagan, once on the bench, will rule, repeatedly and often, to further these desires. And when she does, each and every time she does, there will be people clearly responsible for these rulings. First and foremost will be Ms. Kagan herself. Next on the list will be President Obama. Following him will be all the goofy Democrats in the Senate who would not know the Constitution if it was put in front of them with a big neon flashing sign saying, “Constitution,” and who will rubber stamped this nomination. But behind all these sorry souls will be none other than Senator Lindsey Graham. Behind Mr. Graham will be any other Republican that votes to confirm her in the full Senate such as Susan Collins and Dick Lugar who have both voiced support for this horrid candidate for the nation’s highest court.

And because of your role in this matter, Mr. Graham, you will be just as responsible for the destruction of this country as all the rest who were previously named. But you are too interested in being a principled idiot to care.

Help Stop the Government Takeover of the Internet.
Contact Congress Now!

Dear Fellow Conservative,
Let me get right to the point. We need your help!
The Obama Administration is moving full steam ahead with its plans to take over every sector of the U.S. economy. First it was the auto industry, then the health care, energy and financial sectors.
And now, the Obama Administration is advancing a plan for a government takeover of the Internet, too
That's right. On April 6th, a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. made it clear that under current law the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has absolutely no legal authority to impose stifling and unnecessary regulations on the Internet. But instead of accepting the court's ruling, President Obama and his pals at the FCC announced recently that they are just going to ignore it.
Specifically, the administration's plan now is to quickly side step Congress and arbitrarily change the law so that they can regulate the Internet using arcane rules written in the 1930s for outdated telephone lines.
The FCC's announcement has already flooded the financial markets with uncertainty. And, if Obama's scheme to take over the Internet is successful, the result is sure to stifle Internet innovation, cost American jobs and bring to a halt the billions of dollars in private investment that American broadband companies are investing in high speed Internet networks.
Take Action Now. Urge Congress to
Stop the Government Takeover of the Internet
The folks at and other ultra-liberal organizations are euphemistically calling the regulations that will lead to a government takeover of the Internet "Net Neutrality."
Don't be fooled. "Net Neutrality" is anything but neutral. Indeed, it is an unnecessary solution in search of a major problem.
Specifically, Net Neutrality regulations, as proposed by President Obama's Federal Communications Commission, would virtually eliminate broadband companies' ability to manage their own networks, prevent web congestion and provide consumers with a safe, secure and reliable connection to the Internet.
As the editors of The Wall Street Journal recently wrote, "FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski did their dirty work this week by announcing that he plans to reclassify broadband lines so his agency can regulate them under rules that were written for Ma Bell in the 1930s. This means subjecting the Internet to new political supervision--from the federal government and 50 state public utility commissions. The goal is to put one more industry under Washington's political thumb."
Why make government bureaucrats in Washington the gatekeepers of one of the few bright spots of our nation's struggling economy - an Internet sector that continues to innovate, thrive, create jobs and provide enormous benefit for consumers?
Urge Congress to Stop the
Government Takeover of the Internet Now!
Proponents of so-called "Net Neutrality" believe that all Internet infrastructure and online content should constitute public property - owned, operated and regulated by the government.
And if the Obama Administration is successful in its efforts to commandeer the Internet's infrastructure, you better believe they will move to regulate Internet content next.
Perhaps that's why Representative Marsha Blackburn appropriately calls Net Neutrality, "The Fairness Doctrine for the Internet."
The failure of the Left on talk radio is well documented, so are they now turning to the Internet to solidify their political power and silence their critics - anyone who still believes in freedom and liberty?
Fortunately, there is still time to stand up for growth and innovation and oppose yet another government takeover.
But you must act now!
We at the Center for Individual Freedom have launched the "Stop Net Regulation" campaign to engage the American people to oppose the Obama Administration's government takeover of the Internet.
Please join the fight by writing Congress and contacting your elected officials in opposition to Net Neutrality today.
Take Action: Tell Congress to Stop the
Government Takeover of the Internet!
Yours in Freedom,
Jeffrey Mazzella
Center for Individual Freedom
P.S. Please help spread the word by forwarding this email to your friends and family members. Urge them to join you in the fight to stop the government takeover of the Internet.

I just got a roto call from someone inviting me to a Medicare luncheon and I told her I didn't want to have anything to do with Obamacare and she hung up.

So I called my HMO and the woman told me, which I already knew, that Obummers' bill won't take effect until 2013 (since he's campaigning forever and hopes to win in 2012). She did tell me that my benefits increased and that I wouldn't have a monthly co-payment this year because they took funding from the war and gave it to Medicare. I still let her have an earful and let her know I couldn't wait for the fraud to be gone.

In the 2007 South Carolina Legislative Manual, Republican South Carolina Congressman ("CAFTA") Joe Wilson includes the following information listed in his biographical data: "Columbia World Affairs Council; First Presbyterian Church, Columbia; ... ; Sons of Confederate Veterans; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Sinclair Lodge No. 154; Jamil Temple; WOW; ..."

[ Sinclair Lodge No. 154 - Masons ]

Freemasonry is ecumenical in practice, (falsely) asserting that there are many ways, through many religions, to have relationship with the Creator, and to attain heaven. This is in direct conflict with the clear teaching of the Bible, and the authoritative words of the Saviour Himself, Who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." John 14:6

The ecumenical teaching of Freemasonry is therefore unbiblical. Christianity is incompatible with Freemasonry.

Joe Wilson, who, contrary to his word to his constituents, cast a deciding vote for the New World Order's globalist "Central American Free Trade Agreement" (CAFTA) on July 28, 2005, is a Mason and Shriner.

By his enthusiastic support for the New World Order's unconstitutional, illegal, unjustified, and therefore immoral War in Iraq, and his oath-breaking vote for the American-sovereignty-destroying CAFTA legislation, it is clear that Joe Wilson is not upholding his Oath of Office as a Congressman. By his continued, long-term involvement in Freemasonry, highlighted by his Freemasonry award at this World Masonic Conference in Washington, D.C., it is clear, more importantly, that Joe Wilson is not upholding his profession as a Christian. A man cannot serve both the false god(s) of Freemasonry and the God of the Bible.

"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matthew 6:24

Administration Trying to Build CAFTA Majority Vote by Vote

Clash in House With Democrats Takes On Added Status

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 21, 2005; A04

At a closed-door meeting of House Republicans yesterday, Rep. Bill Thomas (Calif.) sidled up to the lectern and hinted that the leadership might look more favorably on lawmakers' requests for highways and bridges if they vote for the Central American Free Trade Agreement, according to three GOP witnesses.

"Just to let you know, we're having some problems with the highway bill. It probably won't be finished until after the CAFTA vote," the deadly serious chairman of the Ways and Means Committee said to knowing laughter.

In the scope of trade deals, CAFTA is a minor economic matter, extending duty-free trading privileges to six Latin American countries whose combined economies are smaller than the Czech Republic's. But as a political fight, the deal has snowballed into a major showdown ahead of the final House vote next week.

"CAFTA has been given symbolic status by both sides that is well outside its true economic importance," said Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.), who opposed the agreement in the Ways and Means Committee, then promised to support it next week after securing a promised vote on China trade legislation. "But that does not mean it does not have enormous political significance," he said.

[Steve Lefemine: On the contrary, CAFTA has ENORMOUS significance, and not just "political." It's real purpose is to be another stepping-stone on the road to first, regional government in the Western Hemisphere, and then eventually, one-world global government - the New World Order.]

Both sides agree a CAFTA defeat would weaken President Bush's hand on the rest of his legislative agenda while casting a pall on looming trade negotiations with far greater significance: the hemispheric Free Trade Agreement of the Americas and the Doha round of global trade talks. The Senate recently approved CAFTA.

"Clearly a CAFTA defeat would have larger implications than just the agreement," said Matthew Niemeyer, assistant U.S. trade representative for congressional affairs. "And that's why we won't fail."

Bush has held eight meetings with House members, three with senators, and appeared at five dedicated CAFTA events, the latest scheduled for today at the Organization of American States. Since U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman took office 2 1/2 months ago, he has held about 100 meetings on and off Capitol Hill.

According to administration and House aides, the White House has authorized Republican leaders to secure votes with whatever is at hand, from amendments to the highway and energy bills to the still incomplete annual appropriations bills. Side deals may be in the works on textiles and sugar. House leaders have even approved a vote on a slate of punitive China trade provisions that risks alienating a trading partner that dwarfs Central America.

"No one's opposing CAFTA yet," said Julia Hughes, a lobbyist for textile and apparel importers, who is anxious about the concessions already on the table. "But they're really taking away some of the benefits that make it meaningful."

On the other side, Democrats and their allies have countered with threats to cut off fund-raising support for any Democrat flirting with a "yes" vote. Trade unions have used radio advertising to keep up the pressure, especially on three Republicans in the Syracuse, N.Y., area. Constituents of Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (Tex.), an undecided Democrat, have been subjected to two rounds of automated, pro-CAFTA phone calls, while his San Antonio staff was targeted by laid-off Levi Strauss & Co. workers protesting the deal.

"There's a whole lot of pushing and shoving, on both sides actually," Gonzalez said. "There have been some difficult votes around here in the past years, but this one, you've never seen anything like it."

So far, administration officials concede they still do not have the votes to pass CAFTA in the House. They will likely be five to 10 votes short when the proposed agreement goes to a final tally Wednesday or Thursday. Opponents say they have 28 solid Republican votes against the pact, while only a dozen Democrats may back it.

The White House had hoped to win over blocs of undecideds -- textile representatives, sugar industry allies, immigration opponents, or lawmakers from manufacturing areas rife with anti-China feelings. But those blocs have barely budged. Now, the administration is going vote by vote.

"We're not there yet," Niemeyer said, "but we're quickly cleaning up undecideds and are clearly within striking distance."

To win over Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) and possibly a few more textile-state Republicans, Thomas secured a promise this week from the six CAFTA countries to halt the use of Chinese-made apparel pockets and linings for their duty-free clothing exports to the United States.

English was granted a vote on his China trade provisions. And sugar-state lawmakers are wringing out new concessions that could allow sugar growers access to the federally mandated ethanol market.

"I feel very good about the fact that CAFTA is helping to secure and lift up our own neighborhood [in Centra America]," said Rep. Adam Putnam (R), whose Central Florida district includes sugar cane growers. "I just want to make sure it doesn't throw an industry that I support overboard."

House members say the president has expressed some exasperation about the amount of time he has spent on the deal. He has had to reach out to some strange bedfellows.

[Steve Lefemine: Note how little CAFTA has been in the news... while Christians and conservatives are largely distracted by the nomination of Washington establishment lawyer/judge John Roberts... and the media is focusing Americans' attention on many other places... President Bush is working to pressure congressmen to give away American sovereignty and independence, and the willing accomplices of the dominant media cooperate in a foolish, self-destructive, relative complicity of silence.

If America is submerged into a supra-national, global government, the sovereign First Amendment protections of the U.S. Constitution will, by definition, also be superseded - that includes Freedom of the Press !]

And no potential ally has proven too small for attention. Earlier this month, Bush aides surprised Anne Alonzo, approaching the former Clinton administration official and seeking an invitation for the president to address her small pro-CAFTA Hispanic Alliance for Free Trade. That speech is planned for today.

"We're not a big mean fighting machine. It's just me and him," Alonzo said, pointing to an intern.

Any member of the US House of Representatives who votes for CAFTA, this unconstitutional transfer of Congressional authority to internationalbureaucrats, and erosion of American independence and sovereignty, is breaking his (or her) Oath of Office, and should be thereafter impeached.

**************All Four SC Republican House members vote 'For' CAFTA:
Henry Brown, Joe Wilson, Gresham Barrett, and Bob Inglis

Henry Brown, Joe Wilson, Gresham Barrett, and Bob Inglis

If even ONE of these four SC Republican House members had voted against CAFTA instead of voting for this sell-out of American workers, American factories, and American sovereignty, then the entire House vote would have been a tie (216 to 216), and CAFTA would have failed !

Despite the assertion in The State on Tues., July 26, the day before the CAFTA debate began in the US House in earnest, that JOE WILSON was among three 'definite "no" votes' in the South Carolina 8-member Congressional delegation (2 US Senators and 6 Congressmen), when it was all said done, and CAFTA passed the US House by the narrowest of margins, 217 to 215, JOE WILSON CHANGED HIS VOTE, AND VOTED PRO-CAFTA WITH PRESIDENT BUSH.

Indeed, The State reported on Thursday, July 28, that the passage of CAFTA was "a personal triumph for President Bush, who campaigned aggressively for the accord..." and that the President of the United States had even taken the extraordinary step to actually go to the U.S. Capitol Building to personally lobby Republican House members. As report by The State, "It was an uphill effort to win a majority, with Bush traveling to Capitol Hill earlier in the day to appeal to wavering Republicans..."

In the end, it appears that Congressman Joe Wilson (R-Lexington) was more loyal to the Establishment agenda of President Bushthan what he himself probably knows is in the best interestof the people he represents in the 2nd Congressional Districtof South Carolina (Lexington County to Beaufort County).

CAFTA = building block for the new world order
CAFTA is not about "free" trade. CAFTA, like NAFTA, like the European Union, is about progressively emplacing the building blocks
of regional government toward the eventual goal of world government... one-world government...the new world order (look on the back
of the U.S. one-dollar bill in your pocket,or go to , and notice the phrase at the base of the unfinished pyramid
( like the unfinished Tower of Babel that the Council of Europe has used in a promotional poster:
and ); that phrase is "Novus Ordo Seclorum," or NEW ORDER OF THE AGES or
NEW WORLD ORDER. Then let shivers run to the core of your being when you realize that the Great Seal of the United States was designed
in 1782 (five years before the Constitutional Convention). That's how long the Illuminati agenda for global domination has been around.

NOTE: For the suckers in South Carolina who love to throw money at empty brained politicians . . . here is evidence that you have been used again. The word on the street is that about $1 million was tossed into Rep. Joe Wilson's coffers with his comment to Obama, "You lie." Well, so does Joe. As always, nothing is politics is an accident. I strongly suspect that the GOP told him to let his feelings out during Obama's speech in order to create friction . . . which is the grease that lubes the political wheels. The GOP desperately needs to recreate its base in South Carolina and Joe was the way to do it. He obeys the leadership. LEARN . .. stop doing this. Become American, and not a party loyalist. Grow up. Stop funding the men in office . . . and go find men who are honorable to replace them. Washingtonians are playing all of you like a bunch of dummies . .. and you are. Joe Wilson Voted to Provide Taxpayer Money for Illegal Immigrants' Healthcare By Donny Shaw 11 Sep 2009 On Wednesday night, Rep. Joe Wilson [R, SC-2], shouted "You lie!" at President Obama when he said that the healthcare bill would not cover illegal immigrants. "The supporters of the government takeover of healthcare and liberals who want to give healthcare to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan," Wilson said the next day in a campaign fundraising video. However, in 2003 [under Bush], Wilson voted to provide federal funds for illegal immigrants' healthcare. The vote came on the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which contained Sec. 1011 authorizing $250,000 annually between 2003 and 2008 for government reimbursements to hospitals who provide treatment for uninsured illegal immigrants. The program has been extended through 2009 and there is currently a bipartisan bill in Congress to make it permanent. [Wilson obviously has no problem funding undocumented workers' health care, as long as the 'president' is white. --LRP]

Afghanistan prisoners to be allowed to challenge their detention for first time 13 Sep 2009 Prisoners held in Afghanistan for years without trial in a notorious military prison and accused of being Taliban fighters or terrorists will for the first time be able to challenge their detention. More than 600 prisoners held at Bagram airbase will be given a chance to have their case reviewed under a new scheme disclosed by the Pentagon... The move was met cautiously by lawyers working with prisoners. Ramzi Kassem, a law professor at City University of New York acting for a Yemeni seized in Thailand in 2002 said it was "window dressing". "The whole thing was meant to pull the wool over the eyes of the judicial system. These changes don't come anywhere near an adequate substitute for a real review." The guidelines came to light as President Barack Obama's administration reviewed Bush-era detention policies. His government is currently in US court battles with lawyers seeking to gain full legal rights for Bagram detainees.

U.S. to Expand Review of Detainees in Afghan Prison --Some of the detainees have already been held at Bagram for as long as six years. 13 Sep 2009 The Obama administration soon plans to issue new guidelines aimed at giving the hundreds of prisoners at an American detention center in Afghanistan significantly more ability to challenge their custody, Pentagon officials and detainee advocates say. The new Pentagon guidelines would assign military-appointed representatives to each of the roughly 600 detainees at the American-run prison at the Bagram Air Base north of Kabul... Two prisoners [argue] that they were not enemy combatants and want a civilian judge to review the evidence against them and order their release, under the constitutional right of habeas corpus. The Obama administration, like the Bush administration, has rejected this argument... The new policy guidelines will bolster the government’s case, said the Defense Department official, who added, "We want to be able to go into court and say we have good review procedures." The Obama administration had sought to preserve Bagram as a haven where it could detain terrorism suspects beyond the reach of American courts, agreeing with the Bush regime’s view that courts had no jurisdiction over prisoners there.

'America's final goal is to create confrontation between Iran and Iraq.' US wants Iran-Iraq confrontation: Vahidi 12 Sep 2009 Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday that Washington was aiming to trigger a confrontation between former archfoes turned allies Iran and Iraq. "America's final goal is to create confrontation between Iran and Iraq," Vahidi said in reaction to an interview by US Defence Secretary Robert Gates in which he urged Washington's Arab allies to strengthen their military capabilities in order to pressure Iran into halting its nuclear programme. "We advise US officials not to try to militarise the atmosphere in the region and to change their wrong strategy to make up for past mistakes," Vahidi was quoted as saying by Fars new agency.

The first bomb went off next to the tomb of a revered ninth century religious figure, Sheik Othman al-Omari. Then a car bomb exploded in a nearby parking lot as crowds were gathering. The blasts damaged the shrine and blew out the windows of neighboring buildings.

US not to channel aid to Pak through the government sector: official 13 Sep 2009 The United States has made it clear that it would not funnel its aid to Pakistan through the government sector unless it is convinced that the funds would be used effectively and efficiently and exactly for the purpose it is meant for. Total and Chevron accused of propping up junta 10 Sep 2009 Two reports by EarthRights International, a US-based rights advocacy group, allege that energy giants Total and Chevron are propping up Burma's junta with a gas project that has allowed the regime to stash billions of dollars. Energy giants Total and Chevron are propping up Myanmar's junta with a gas project that has allowed the regime to stash nearly five billion dollars in Singaporean banks, a rights group said Thursday. France's Total and US-based Chevron have also tried to whitewash alleged rights abuses by Myanmar troops guarding the pipeline, including forced labour and killings, two reports by US-based EarthRights International said.

Court temporarily halts CIA secrets case 13 Sep 2009 A federal appeals court has put a lawsuit against the CIA on hold temporarily, disagreeing with a lower court judge who claimed the agency was hiding behind dubious national security arguments to shield itself from potential embarrassment. The decision by a federal appeals panel on Thursday to grant an emergency stay will likely put off the questioning of a key witness in the case. The CIA has argued that allowing the case to proceed would divulge classified information.

Capable of use as an effective loudspeaker, the LRAD also has the ability to emit a deafening tone aimed at incapacitating and dispersing a crowd without use of lethal force.

Disaster Plans Being Revised For Swine Flu 13 Sep 2009 Even if swine flu remains a mild infection, the pandemic could be the tipping point for an emergency medical system teetering on the edge. Federal officials are asking hospitals to report more current details about how stressed or well-equipped they are so the officials can help coordinate care in a crisis. In a worst-case scenario, some states, such as Iowa and California, have mobile hospitals consisting of a series of connected tents that they could rush to any area and erect, for example, on a football field.

Govt sees early delivery of flu vaccine 13 Sep 2009 Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Sunday said the United States now expects to receive the first batch of [deadly] swine flu vaccine in early October, a few weeks earlier than expected. "We're on track to have an ample supply by October," Sebelius told ABC television "but we may have some early vaccine as early as the first full week in October."

Curiouser and curiouser: 2 flu strains in 1 pig led to new H1N1 --Swine flues merged, jumped to humans 13 Sep 2009 The new H1N1 strain is based primarily on an unusual virus that has been circulating widely in U.S. pigs since the 1990s. That "triple reassortant" flu is actually a combination of classic swine flu, a North American avian flu and a strain of human flu. Somehow [!?!], a single pig became simultaneously infected with that virus and a pure swine flu strain found in pigs in Europe and Asia. The two strains swapped genetic material to produce the new H1N1 strain, which then began to infect humans. How did strains mix? That remains a mystery, and scientists will probably never know. [Uh, I'd say, we *all* know! I saw this one marching down Broadway when Shock & Awe was just a twinkle in Rumsfeld's eye. See: Killer flu recreated in the lab 07 Oct 2004 UK Scientists have shown that tiny changes to modern flu viruses could render them as deadly as the 1918 strain which killed millions. A US team added two genes from a sample of the 1918 virus to a modern strain known to have no effect on mice. Animals exposed to this composite were dying within days of symptoms similar to those found in human victims of the 1918 pandemic. And, they are about to hit paydirt, w. this pandemic insanity. --LRP]

Rally Size in Tens of Thousands, Not 1M to 1.5M as Teabagger Said. 12 Sep 2009 Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration's health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News. Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks [United Healthcare whore], the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

House may vote on formal rebuke for Rep. Wilson outburst 13 Sep 2009 The House of Representatives appears headed for a vote to formally rebuke Rep. Joe Wilson this week for heckling President Obama after the South Carolina Republican refused Sunday to apologize on the House floor. "The House likely will take up a resolution," Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told USA TODAY. "He violated the decorum of the House; it has to be resolved in the House."

Insurance Industry to Write New Obama Health Care Compromise Bill --The universal health care provision will mandate that everyone buy a health care plan from a private insurance provider or be thrown into Guantanamo Bay prison as a traitor. By R J Shulman 13 Sep 2009 In a bold new move to push health care reform through Congress by the end of the year, President Barack Obama has asked the insurance industry to help draft a bill that can get the votes of so-called Blue Dog Democrats and some Republican support... The bill also makes it illegal for anyone, any government entity or business to negotiate for lower health care premium prices as that would be considered government interference with the free market. "We just can't have anyone trying to shove down limits down the throats of CEO bonuses as that is just anti-American," said Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT). (Satire )

Stiglitz Says Banking Problems Are Now Bigger Than Pre-Lehman 13 Sep 2009 Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Prize- winning economist, said the U.S. has failed to fix the underlying problems of its banking system after the credit crunch and the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. "In the U.S. and many other countries, the too-big-to-fail banks have become even bigger," Stiglitz said in an interview today in Paris. "The problems are worse than they were in 2007 before the crisis."

Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America' 11 Sep 2009 A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer. Creation, starring Paul Bettany, details Darwin's "struggle between faith and reason" as he wrote On The Origin of Species . The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia. However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country [of morons] where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.

Previous lead stories: Putin warns against Iran attack --US and Israel have never ruled out the option of air strikes on Iran to stop it acquiring an atomic weapon 11 Sep 2009 Russian PM Vladimir Putin has warned against military action targeting Iran or imposing new sanctions to curb its nuclear programme. Iran's latest proposals on its nuclear ambitions have brought diverging views from the US and Russia. Earlier, a US official told the BBC that Washington was unhappy with the proposals, submitted on Wednesday. President Barack Obama has given Tehran until the end of September to respond to his friendlier overtures or face new sanctions.

Obama says U.S. must renew fight against al Qaeda 11 Sep 2009 President George W. Bush Barack Obama sought to rally Americans behind the war in Afghanistan on the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States as opinion polls show faltering public support for the conflict. "Let us renew our resolve against those who perpetrated this barbaric act and plot against us still," Obama said on Friday at a somber ceremony attended by about 500 people under rain-filled skies at the Pentagon. "In pursuit of al Qaeda and its extremist allies we will never falter," he said, before laying a wreath at a memorial for those killed at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.
