Members and friends of the Oklahoma Conservative Political Action
Committee (OCPAC)

++ MEETING CANCELED - Due to Monday’s tragic tornado, tonight’s
(5.21.13) Common Core Curriculum meeting in downtown Edmond has been
canceled. It will be rescheduled at another time.

++ HELP FOR STORM VICTIMS - If you are a Christian and want to help
your brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ, as well as others,
may I suggest sending a check to the First Baptist Church of Moore.
This is the large Baptist Church were we hold the Reclaiming America
for Christ conference each year and right now they are a hub of relief
activity. I am sure many of their members have been victims of the
storm, as well as many of their neighbors who aren’t members of the
church. There are other churches helping, I simply know pastor Kevin
Clarkson and suggest if you want to see God glorified in this tragedy,
giving through this church would be wonderful. The best way to help is
through a monetary contribution.

Please make your check out to:

First Baptist Church of Moore
301 N.E. 27th St.
Moore, Ok 73160

On the memo line, write: Disaster Relief

Thanks for your time and attention.

Guys, I need your HELP ASAP DESPERATELY! We have an opportunity to get a bill to stop the Common Core RIGHT NOW! We are afraid the bill that Gus Blackwell and others are trying to use as a vehicle right now will end up in a CR with A.J. Griffin. We need you to round up people and get them to call A.J. and tell her to vote on any bill that comes to her that would stop the Common Core right now. Thanks for anything you can do!

WHAT’S WRONG WITH “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?”

Logan County Commissioner Mark SharptonAs a county commissioner I am often in regional planning meetings where I continually hear the word “sustainable” or “sustainable development.” If you begin to pay attention, you will hear it too, or read it in news articles and reports generated by government planning agencies.

What does the word mean and why is it used so frequently? It sounds good, but is it? In an effort to educate myself on the subject, I recently attended a conference in Tulsa to hear Rosa Koire, a recognized spokesperson on the topic. I found what she had to say troubling. Here is some of what she said and encouraged us to share with others….

URGENT ACTION ITEM - The Senate, on a 30 to 15 vote margin, passedSB 652, the $10 million dollar tax increase, masquerading as a fee
increase, supposedly to provide more driver’s license examiners. As I
pointed out in Monday’s e-mail, technology may well solve the problem
of long lines at the examining stations by requiring folks to make an
online appointment to see an examiner rather than needing a tax
increase to hire more examiners. If technology fails to solve the
problem, some of the current revenues from our license are being
diverted for other uses and they could be re-captured to use for more
examiners. In addition, very large numbers of people currently driving
have reduced rates or are exempted from having to pay for a license.
More revenues could be collected, if necessary, by having these “free
loaders” to start paying their fair share for a drivers license.

THEREFORE, we need to immediately contact Governor Fallin and ask her
to VETO SB 652, the nearly $10 million dollar tax increase*. Please
ask her to urge the legislature to give technology a chance to solve
this problem rather than use the knee jerk reaction of another tax
increase. Time is of the essence, please call her OKC office at (405)
521-2342 or her Tulsa office at (918) 581-2801. Please call today and
politely ask her to VETO SB 652, call tomorrow and every day following
to ask if she has decided to veto the bill or not. Also, of lesser
value is to e-mail her at: Mary.Fallin@gov.ok.gov.

Thanks for your time and attention, please act immediately, sources
tell me she may be willing to veto this measure and citizen pressure
may make the difference.

* This is a tax increase and not a fee increase since part of the new
revenues raised by this increase in the cost of a license is being
diverted for a use not related to the cost of hiring more drivers
examiners or even the cost of obtaining a drivers license. Our state
constitution requires any TAX increase to receive a 75% super majority
(fee increases need only a simple majority) in the legislature or go
to a vote of the people. It passed the House 53 to 42, not anywhere
near the 75% super majority required, therefore it didn’t receive
enough votes for a tax increase and this may well lead to a lawsuit by
Jerry Fent, if Governor Fallin fails to veto the measure.

Trends in American Public Schooling

Like cicadas emerging from their shells, they come out every spring - a delegation from Oklahoma's monopoly education system warning us with dire looks that we absolutely must "invest" more millions in our schools. To achieve exactly what they never quite make clear, but this year as in past years there's a number attached. For 2013, it's $117 million. They didn't quite get what they wanted this year, but state Superintendent Janet Barresi did announce on Thursday that preK-12 education would receive $91 million in new funds for the next fiscal year.

But a quick glance at the chart above, as well as a look at Oklahoma school data from the most recent year, 2011, suggests this is not going to be money well spent.
