Harry Reid Will Introduce Universal Background Checks in Gun Control Bill

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he will include a requirement for expanded background checks for firearms buyers in a gun control bill the Senate debates next month.

The Huffington Post reported Reid would introduce “universal background checks.”

The Nevada Democrat says he hopes that during Congress’ upcoming two-week break, senators will reach compromise on background check language with bipartisan support.

If not, Reid says in a statement that the Senate will vote on a stricter measure expanding the checks to virtually all private gun transactions, with few exceptions.

President Barack Obama and many gun control advocates consider an expansion of background checks the strongest step lawmakers could take to reduce firearms violence.

Opponents say the system is easily sidestepped by criminals and threatens creation of a government file on gun owners – which is illegal under federal law.

Reid’s announcement is certain to buoy gun control supporters after a proposed assault weapons ban was stripped from the main bill earlier this week.

Reid vowed that a ban on assault weapons and limits on ammunition magazines would be voted on in the Senate.

  • Nothing will pass on this now. The Swinestein bill is dead in the water. There won't be any support in the House for any new gun bill coming from the Senate. House Republicans are standing firm about enforcing existing laws before making new ones.

    • i hope you are right Will, i thought i saw a needle and thread in frankenstien grubby little hands you know if Ried and frankenstien would marry, they would be Reidenstien

  • When will this be merged with all the other data they've gathered: banking, utilities, criminal, credit, tax, healthcare, education, *****SOCIAL MEDIA*****, Census, Voting Records, and now this?

Who needs to worry about silly borders when the entire world will be under the watchful control of global bean counters?

Welcome to Technocracy. Government by machines and engineers. We are all SKUs/Stock Keeping Units to be exploited and managed like so many widgets.

  • Harry Reid needs to shut up and go anywhere but Nevada.

    • This "universal background check" is THE most egregious of any of the propsed gun control bills.  Every background check is linked to a specfic firearm.  That makes it legalized registration.  There is only one reason for registration; to lead to confiscation.  Don't buy into any excuses.  There is NOTHING good about it.

      • And registration ALWAYS leads to confiscation and then mass murder.

  • Maybe so to some degree Tallulah, but we are SKU's with a mind and free will which screws up the system. Additionally, some of those SKU's you refer to are 'lost packages' where the corporation doesn't know where they fell off a train at. This creates uncertainty and a great deal of it. Especially since well over 100 million of the SKU's are armed and many armed to the teeth and more. Worse still for those 'bean counters' is that a great many of those armed SKU's with free will were very well trained in the use of weapons.

  • A database is only as good as it's data, which often is not very accurate in the big ones (according to the Navy's late Grace Hopper). Like was said earlier, this can be to our advantage.
Also, don't sign up for a no-call list. As a past database expert (with discernment), I immediately recognized them as federal traps to gather citizens' data.
  • I believe this bill might have teeth. This would be the data bank needed to march in and take our guns..They would have a path to our doors.. Never underestimate what this swine will do.   ALL OF THEM.

  • Where does the "will not be infringed" come into play you morose ass?
