McChrystal Resigned

Obama Accepts McChrystal's Resignation

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 23, 2010 – President Barack Obama today accepted Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal's resignation from his post as the top NATO and U.S. commander in Afghanistan and announced he is nominating Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. Central Command, to replace him.

McChrystal had been ordered to Washington to meet first with Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and then with the president to answer for remarks attributed to him and members of his staff in a Rolling Stone magazine article.

In a statement released after the announcement, McChrystal expressed support for the president's Afghanistan policy:

"This morning the President accepted my resignation as Commander of U.S. and NATO Coalition Forces in Afghanistan. I strongly support the President’s strategy in Afghanistan and am deeply committed to our coalition forces, our partner nations, and the Afghan people. It was out of respect for this commitment -- and a desire to see the mission succeed -- that I tendered my resignation. It has been my privilege and honor to lead our nation’s finest."

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen issued the following statement:

"I have taken note that General McChrystal is stepping down as Commander of the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan. I thank General McChrystal for his service to NATO, and for the enormous effort he has put into leading the ISAF mission.

"While he will no longer be the commander, the approach he helped put in place is the right one. The strategy continues to have NATO's support, and our forces will continue to carry it out. Our operations in Afghanistan are continuing today, and they will not miss a beat. We have a strong military team in Afghanistan. My Senior Civilian Representative, Mark Sedwill will continue to direct our effort on the political side. And soon, a new Commander of ISAF will take up his position.

"The Afghan people should have no doubt that we will continue to carry out our mission in partnership with them. We will continue working to protect the Afghan population and to build the Afghan security forces, and we will stay for as long as it takes to do our job."

  • Yes, I heard about this on Schnitt show yesterday, It is a sad day for the US. We need more men to stand up against this evil empire in Washinton!!!!!!!!!
  • I am apparently one of the 28% of Americans who think that President Obama is absolutely correct in accepting "Rogue" General McChrystal's resignation. If any of these people complaining had actually read the Rolling Stone article that created this controversy they would likely agree. This guy has a long history of arrogance and self promotion and hasn't changed even according to his own wife of 32 years. If these complainers want a military "Junta-type" government that exists in many lesser developed countries then they are even more stupid than these current comments indicate.

    • Its interesting that Rolling Stone can now change commanders in a war area. Somehow this kind of bears a faint 'Vietnam' shadow...

I think, Bob, that the percentage of Americans who think the phoney is absolutely correct missed the target: he is only 'absolutely correct' in furthering his unAmerican plans!
    • I'm guessing you're not acquainted with Douglas McArthur, or Dwight Eisenhower, or Mongomery, Patton, deGaulle... I could go on;;; In a military commander, that can actually be a desirable trait. Most of the more flamboyant and successful generals throughout history have been that sort of person. But I don't suppose you ever served your nation in the military either, so you wouldn't know that. I used to know a lof of junior Marine officers who were cultivating just that trait already. I also believe GEN McChrystal is a a very frustrated officer tired of seeing kids killed because of absurd "rules of engagement" in a war zone. He's been around long enough to know you have to fight a war like a WAR if you intend to win it! War isn't pretty or nice and shouldn't be taken up lightly, but when it is, it should be fought like one means it, or all you're doing is sending kids to their deaths for NOTHING! That happened in Korea, it happened in Vietnam and now it's happening again.
  • I could not work for that foreigner and a muslim to boot a non-citizen; its about time that we heard from the senate
