Number of Homeschoolers Growing Nationwide

"Wow! Did you know this? "As the dissatisfaction with the U.S. education system among parents grows, so does the appeal of homeschooling. Since 1999, the number of children who are being homeschooled has increased by 75%. Researchers are expecting a surge in the number of students educated at home by their parents over the next ten years as more families spurn public schools.

As the dissatisfaction with the U.S. education system among parents grows, so does the appeal of homeschooling. Since 1999, the number of children who are being homeschooled has increased by 75%. Although currently only 4% of all school children nationwide are educated at home, the number of primary school kids whose parents choose to forgo traditional education is growing seven times faster than the number of kids enrolling in K-12 every year.

Any concerns expressed about the quality of education offered to the kids by their parents can surely be put to rest by the consistently high placement of homeschooled kids on standardized assessment exams. Data shows that those who are independently educated typically score between 65th and 89th percentile on such exams, while those attending traditional schools average on the 50th percentile. Furthermore, the achievement gaps, long plaguing school systems around the country, aren’t present in homeschooling environment. There’s no difference in achievement between sexes, income levels or race/ethnicity.

Recent studies laud homeschoolers’ academic success, noting their significantly higher ACT-Composite scores as high schoolers and higher grade point averages as college students. Yet surprisingly, the average expenditure for the education of a homeschooled child, per year, is $500 to $600, compared to an average expenditure of $10,000 per child, per year, for public school students.

College recruiters from the best schools in the United States aren’t slow to recognize homeschoolers’ achievements. Those from non-traditional education environments matriculate in colleges and attain a four-year degree at much higher rates than their counterparts from public and even private schools. Homeschoolers are actively recruited by schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Stanford University and Duke.

Nor do homeschoolers miss out on the so-called socialization opportunities, something considered a vital part of a traditional school environment and lacking in those who don’t attend regular schools. On the contrary, those educated at home by their parents tend to be more socially engaged than their peers, and according to the National Home Education Research Institute survey, demonstrate “healthy social, psychological, and emotional development, and success into adulthood.”

Based on recent data, researchers such as Dr. Brian Ray (NHERI.org) “expect to observe a notable surge in the number of children being homeschooled in the next 5 to 10 years. The rise would be in terms of both absolute numbers and percentage of the K to 12 student population. This increase would be in part because . . . [1] a large number of those individuals who were being home educated in the 1990s may begin to homeschool their own school-age children and [2] the continued successes of home-educated students.”

  • If you look back at the 40`s and 50`s it was like being in home schools. The teachers I had acted just like my mother and father and I learned and had almost all A`s. Not like the schools today which are nothing more than baby sitters.. Then you the drug companys that are putting in chemicals that make our kids dumb or with ADHD or in some cases retarded all because of the bad chemicals added to the baby shots that the young have to take... Then the FDA and EPA say great as they fill their back pockets with payoffs...

  • We started Home Schooling last year. And it has had amazing affect on your whole family. More togetherness, Less stress!

Children look forward to learning there lesson and have become self starters. It was frustrating at first to fill in the blanks that public schools had left. And we are off and running. A child of ours is a slow learner and struggled in must every class at school and was under great stress daily. Bullied to no end. The special ed. classes where full of hoodlums that did not belong in a public setting to start with. Teachers did the work for the students and helped with the answers to the test.

My oldest son is a Army Recruiter and a large number of prospects fresh out of public high school can not pass the lowest score allowed to join the army. So tell me how did they get that diploma?

    • My daughter started Computer Charter home schooling 2 years ago. I've noticed real changes in the grandkids since, but she says the financial situation may mean she has to get a job next year and they may have to go back to public school. Their dad's been out of work for several months so no child support, and stepdad's health isn't great. She had constant problems between the school and her son and it's probably on his record so going back he'll probably be in for attitude of expecting him to fail, whether he's back in the same school system or not. I hate to see it happen but will have to work and can't help them financially. I wonder how many others will be thrown into this situation.

    • Can you give me more info.?

I heard some programs for home schooling do not let your child achieve status for certain higher education schooling.

      Thank you,

  • We started homeschooling our high functioning autistic son following an absolutely disastrous 3rd grade year. Two years later it has been a tremendous success! He is ahead of his peers and his math and science scores are incredible. We have twin girls and a baby boy that we will allow to go to K-1 then it is homeschool for them as well.
Bottom line: our public school system is a disgrace. Without a voucher system homeschooling is our only alternative. Unfortunately, not all families have the ability to choose this option.
    • I'd love to see something with home schoolers where they do old fashioned "Grange style" get togethers and those who can homeschool their own and a neighbor or family members kids, and be legally allowed to do so. If someone comes from a family where the parent can't stay home to school their kids, join the local schooling Grange, and pay into the cost for materials or whatever they can. If they paid the teachers the public schools would demand a charter or something, but nothing wrong with "like kind" swaps of helping with whatever the schooler needs help with.

  • we the people, who are the real government, going to elementry/junior/high schools back in the 50,s and 60,s we learned american history, pledged alligence to the flag, and if we got out of line, after the teacher beat the shi- out us,we went home, and got another beating, thats the way it was in brklyn in the 50,s and 60,s.but its great people are self teaching there children today at home, because these un american vile traitors in our schools, are trying to brain wash our kids,to make it easier to transform the children into un american robots.god bless sheriff joe and cold case pose, chuck norris, frank serpcio, and all legal american veternas/citizens,god bless america, yea thou i walk in the shadow of the valley of death,i will fear no evil/ovomit/satan

    • 15  years ago my daughter and family were assigned to Barksdale AFB  My daughter and husband immediately started to home school their 3 kids.  My concern led me to visit and observe. 2 years later the kids were in the Rhode Island school system. they got all "A"s

Today the oldest is flying out of Omaha with the Recon wing. the second is in the banking business in Utah and the 3rd is on his way to law school.. Home school? I recommend it.

  • When I was in school, we had one teacher through the 6th grade.  We said prayer at school.  If any student acted up, you got on your hand, with a ruler, slapped.  If you really needed some more discipline, you went to the office, and was spanked.

    Public schools are indoctrination camps.

I tried to when my oldest went to school, I asked to homeschool, but at that time I was told I couldn't or I'd be thrown in jail.

PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, do your children, grandchildren a great favor....HOMESCHOOL.

    • "Public schools are indoctrination camps"

Lois, that's the best reason of all to Homeschool.
