Any teacher not standing up against this should be ashamed and all parents should hold them accountable! There are no more excuses! Stand up for what is right - stop being a go along to get along coward! Cowering in the shadows is not helpful! It enables more crap like this to keep happening.

The Blaze

Parents of students at a high school in Texas are speaking out against a survey students took without parents being told that involved questions asking if their families owned guns, among other potentially controversial topics.

ABC 24 reported that Arlington High School allowed students to take a survey that included questions about guns, abortion and religion, which some parents feel should not have been administered, at least not without their knowledge.

Here’s some of the perspective from parents and students regarding the survey:

April Heath used Facebook as her sounding board after she says her daughter was given the questionnaire at school. In her post, she says her daughter was asked her if her parents owned guns; it also asked for the student’s opinion on the legalization of marijuana, abortion and what her religion is.

Student Phillip Beasley said, “It’s not that big of a deal, it’s just you don’t need to get into other people’s business that’s not yours, you know?”

“To tell you the truth I can’t think of any good reason to do that,” added grandparent Sharon Starlings. “It doesn’t seem right.”

Parents in Arlington say the questionnaire was out of line.

“I would be not OK with that,” said parent Martina Ashmore.

In a statement, Shelby County Schools said the survey was driven by the AP psychology class students and teacher-approved for a project teaching them about the scientific method. Here’s more from the statement:

Topics reflect current issues that students are seeing and reading about in the news, as well as the related laws and policies that address them. To support their research, students were permitted to conduct the surveys in several classes. The surveys were permitted only under the condition that they are completely anonymous and optional, and students were informed prior to the survey being handed out that it was completely anonymous and optional. Teachers of multiple subjects seek opportunities to incorporate current issues in their curriculum, including those included in this survey. Teachers and administrators at Arlington High School supported this research project because they believe the best way to effectively educate students about the issues that concern them is allowing them to be engaged participants in conversations about them.

  • SO WRONG! The school should be held accountable and I recommend  Lawsuits be filed against the school for "INVASION OF PRIVACY'

  • Totally out of hand the schools have gotten. It is none of their business on what church you go to, if you own guns or how they feel about abortions. The schools are there to teach the Students about America and what made this country what it is today. They are suppose to teach the kids what will make America better than it was with Science, Math and past History. Our Educational System in America has been destroted by a bunch of worthless idiots that think they know what is best. It is time for the Parents to take a Giant Step for all Man Kind to Clean up the Educational System in America. Our Education System has gone from the best in the World to all most the bottom because of such ignorance of a few. The time has come to clean all of America Up from Educational to Political . If we don't clean this mess up America is doomed.because of Our stupidity.
  • Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. When they get that down we can start talking about the appropriatness of "Social Engineering" projects in public schools!

  • That excuse , does not fly. Lame, lame excuse.

  • Whose Damned Business is this!!!!  We have the Right to Privacy, and by God, people should respect it, schools included. I had a case, of something similiar in the 70's, and the minute I heard about it, I got in my car, and went straight to the school.  My Niece saw me, and later on told me "Aunt Jo, there was smoke coming out of your ears!!!"  Yes, there was, and when I encountered the "Teacher", I can guarantee you, nothing like that, ever happened again in that school. Stand up, and do not let anyone abuse your Rights. No school needs any of ths information, they are not the census, they are supposed to be there to instruct your Children, period. Pay attention!!!  If you hear of a case such as this, do your very best to put a stop to it, and if possible, get the person who orginated the idea, dismissed.  Raise hell.  These are your Kids, and your Kids are our future, set an example. Parents do your part.

  • Just did a little research on this subject, and the Superintendent of this School District is Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, there are 63,000 students in this District ,it is the 8th largest District in Texas.  Dr. Cavazos contact number is listed as:

682-867-4611, email: mcavazos@aisd.net.  Maybe someone, beside me, would like to contact this man, and ask him why this is being allowed...........................

    • The school district in question is in Tennessee not Texas. The blaze corrected the  story.

  • We have taken a stand. As a family we reject these intrusions on all front. Even at the Emergency room the hospital staff ask imposing question. That have no relativity to the illness or injury you are seeking emergency help for. The minute they start to ask we flat out tell them that we do not participate in there intrusive questioning. Sometimes they say it just there job and agree to stop asking. Other times they get stupid and act as if they are entitled to answers. Doctors office have been asking children question like what tv shows you watch.? Do you get spanked? do you have guns in the house. do you have pets? What religion are you? Mind you this is just at a first visit. To looking for a family doctor with no health issue. We tell them no thank you we are not interested in there prying. If it upsets them we know it is time to leave and find a dr. that will provide health care and not socialism.

  • typical socialist action.

I am glad my children never went through anything like this.

If the teacher wanted to run some statistics, they should have asked questions about the school.

i.e. is this a stupid school?

  • My Husband informed me that was exactly what Hitler did before he took away the Jews guns and privacy and then killed them. Better be careful.
