The Rise of the Surveillance State
By FLOYD BROWN, Chief Political Analyst

I hate to be the bearer of bad news - especially on a Monday - but something big has happened. And you need to know about it.

Last week, while our attention was diverted to the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt, the U.S. House of Representatives snuck in and struck a blow to civil liberties.

They passed new legislation called the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, and it has substantial implications for online freedom.

In fact, CISPA dismantles the entire idea of internet privacy. Every part of your digital life - from your email to your online shopping history - is now fair game for the FBI, the CIA and the Department of Defense.

Not even George Orwell could imagine something quite intrusive...

Who Really Calls the Shots in Our Government?
By FLOYD BROWN, Chief Political Analyst

Congress has proven once again that it's a special interest world - the rest of us are just living in it.

Yesterday, the Senate voted against tighter restrictions on guns and gun owners, effectively ending the push that began in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting.

But the real story here isn't the vote - it's the NRA. You see, the NRA spends millions of dollars lobbying and giving contributions to members of the U.S. Senate. The Senate vote on gun control proves just how effective the NRA's strategy really is.

And I want to talk about this strategy because it provides an excellent view into how Capitol Hill really works. Folks are always telling me they don't understand why this or that happened on Capitol Hill. Well, it's time to shed some light on it.

BECAUSE THE ROSIES DON'T SMELL ANYMORE..GOD BLESS ALL......GOD BLESS AMERICA.

  • Did you hear about the HUUUGE info storage facility theyre building? Dont remember where it is but its out west somewhere. They CLAIM its only going to be used to track terrorist online but you know its really going to track US! They claim oversight is a "safe guard" so they cant use it against us if they wanted to. Claim anybody that has a problem with it is just paranoid
    • I believe that is what this article refers to, Kim.

  • This is not a law, yet.  Here is a link:  http://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/113-2013/h117  If you want this to end, I suggest you inundate your congressperson(s) with letters.  E-mails will NOT work, as they are ignored.  I have tested them and proved they do no good.  Telephones are answered by "go-fers" and assistants that will not pass your comment on.  Some thoughts:  Do not use the Internet for anything you want kept secret.  Remember, social media (Facebook) is open to everyone, so they already have you if you use Facebook.  I do not use Facebook!  If there is something that you must send to someone, put it into a PDF and password-protect it.  Make sure the recipient has the password before you send it.  I found that by using a friends previous street address, without me giving that address, just asking if he remembered it, was enough to safeguard my message.  _ Semper Fi!  Gunny

    • Letters don't work either, Gunny.  Great ideas on the security measures.  Thanks for sharing!

      • Anytime, Rachel!  I do believe that in some instances you are correct regarding letters.  My district Congress person was spending a lot of time and our tax dollars checking out womens' breasts.  I contacted his office and told the person there I have no issues with women getting help with breast cancer.  There are many organizations that help women with this so I requested the Congress person to spend more time with Federal issues and stop wasting our money on his breast cancer brochures.  It has been a long time since he has sent a brochure out.  Maybe he got the word?  Semper Fi!  Gunny

        • Like you, Gunny, I continue to fire them off periodically, despite the fact that they rarely work.  I do believe that they work....sometimes....and it sounds like you have had a few successes with letter-writing.  Kudos to you for that!

          • Rachel, minimal kudos for minimal responses.  However, as a U. S. Marine, we don't give up, but when necessary, you should see what we can do...Semper Fi!  Gunny

            • I have no doubt about what you marines can do, Gunny, and I thank God for you all in our court!  :)

  • Someone passed a rumor to me that there was a group that was going to check the past of the idiots in the house.

Seems only fair, as they are looking into our privacy.  So I passed that rumor to the Speaker, thought he would like to know that what goes around comes around.
