Back in those days many Hollywood "stars" joined the Army to fight the war. Jimmy Stewart was Army air Force and retired a three-star General. Lee Marvin was a US Marine. Clark Gable was a Gunner on a bomber, and even Captain Kangaroo was a decorated US Marine as was the guy that was on his tv -kids show with him.

Wayne tried to join the Army in WW-II but the Army said NO, They said he could do a lot more to support our US troops and help support the war by making patriotic movies instead. He helped support the war by helping to sell American war bonds. And the rest is history.
