I found a great question at RINO DEN, a question that I love hearing and/or reading the answers to. I wanted to ask all of our Veterans and Troops here on PFA this question:

With a big Thank You for Joining and Serving – Why did you join and why did you choose the branch you did?

  • The Marine recruiter wasn't in the day I decided to Go. The Navy recruiter was in. Hence the Navy.  I went in at 17 a High School Drop out in August 1964 . My Mom was a Single Mom with 4 boys on Waitress Wages... I have never regretted My Time in the Navy.

    • Dear David,

You missed a lot by going Navy.

Such as,sleeping in the mud, canned food, warm beer and the gentle warm rain pelting your face!

The rats really were not a problem unless you rolled over on them while sleeping.

I took a tour of a US Missile Frigate in the Bahama's when it was in port about 20 years ago, very nice accomadations. Dust nor mud seem to be a problem on board ship. One question,.... are there mesquitos in the middle of the ocean?

  • I joined the Navy in 57 and just turned 17 because of my grandmother and I were not getting along.. Got my GED at my first station and started doing what I liked to do and that was to run small boats. I could run anything under 120 ft. My first station was NOTS and that was in Long Beach after that it was the West Pac for the next 31/2 years. 2 tenders the Luzon and the Ajax and my last was the Bonnie Dick CVA3l and was out in 62....

  • In 1969 I went before a Judge on assault and battery charges for the third time.  The Judge said he was tired of seeing me in his court room and put me in the USMC.  The best thing that ever happened to me.

  • The Army. My school friend went in the Army and came home on leave one summer day. She looked so sharp in uniform and she was driving a red convertiable and I told her I wanted to join the Army. I spent 20 yrs all together in the Army and I loved wearing that uniform. I met some good people and got to see some of my world.

  • USAF, late in 1970. College was not the right place for me, and I desperately wanted to get out from under my parents. My dad had been in the very early USAF, said it did him good, and I got along withnthe recruiter well enough, aced the qual tests, so it was easy for me for a while.

  • After a protracted illness, I dropped a semester at college and lost my 2C.  I joined the Air Force in 1970 with the hope of learning a transferable skill back to civilian life.  42 years later I am still working in the Computer Industry because of my military training.

    • Tech school in Wichita Falls, maybe? I hated that place with a passion! I fell out after a few weeks, me and those UniVacs did not get along and the instructor was impossible...

  • Joined the Army in 1956 because i didn't want to go to college. served in Korea and Germany spent 10 years active duty. Loved the service wish i could have stayed til retirement, but things didn't work out. Still involved with veterans as Chairman of Macon County Veterans Commission, Decatur, Illinois and member of the Macon County Veterans Honor Guard, providing military funeral honors for veterans. We have performed as many as 212 per year and have been at it since 1995.

  • As a kid growing up all I ever wanted to be was a soldier.  My parents and I did not get along well at all so when I graduated in the bottom third of my class from high school they were only too glad to sign the papers for me to enlist at 17.  The smartest move I ever made.  I maxed most of the Army qualification tests, went to night school, wound up making the deans list, getting my degree and having a very successful career as a CI agent.  Twenty two years later I retired.  I can't stand the government but love the Army.
