  • Two years ago, when I was gardening in my backyard, some kids were skipping school that day and decided that it would be a fun idea to throw rocks at me and my service K9.  I called the police - of course the kids scattered and could not be found.  The cop told me that if they hit me and my wheelchair with a rock they could be charged with a misdemeanor assault - however if they hit my K9 they could be charged with a felony (for cruelty to animals).

Attacks upon Disabled Veterans should be classified as a Hate Crime.

    • Amen Morning Star and it should be a felony. The thought of people doing that just makes my blood boil.
      • Michael M. Regan-

I'm thinking of trying to petition the new Governor to do an Executive Order or declaration for us Disabled Vets and citizens here in Maryland.  I'll start with a few phone calls next week.

        This nonsense is maddening!

        • Go get um morning star.. And I'd start by saying what Going Rougue said "people are more important than animals". Maybe you can connect with some local veterans groups and some lawyers who do pro bono work for veterans. Contact local VFW's I would think they'd help you get the ball rolling. P.S. By the way that dosent mean I don't love my dog!! But you get my point.
          • Michael M. Regan,

Yeah - I understand.   I love my dog very much - he has saved my life 4 times - don't know what I would do if anything happens to him - but I also worry about what would become of him if anything happened to me.  I hope that I out-live him.

            • Might I suggest that you make provisions in your will for your dog?  I, for one, would love to care for him for you and I am sure there are many others here who would so the same.  I would even pay whatever it costs to come and get him.  God Bless!

              • Judith M. Green:

Great idea.  Thanks you so very much.  I have considered to 'up' my life insurance policy to make sure that there is good provision for him, in the event something should happen to me.  I just have to find someone to carry out my request.  And to make sure that the 'State' does not swoop in to 'cash-in', if you know what I mean.

Someone recommended the 'North Shore Animal League' or any animal rescue organization may be able to help me out with my request and navigate the legal process for my will.

It is very kind and sweet of you to offer to care for him if something should happen to me.  Choked me up a bit (that may seem silly, but I truly love my dog).

He is now trying to lick away my tears.

                • Personally, I would not trust North Shore and do you really want him going to a shelter?  I pray, with you, that you outlive him but should that not occur, I urge you to get some plans in place.  If you like, contact me privately and I would be happy to make arrangements to take him for you, if needed, if there is no-one close to you that is trustworthy. I have a great deal of experience with dogs, cats and horses (I worked as a vet tech), and own my home with just under an acre of land, all fenced in.  My sister also worked with rescuing dogs, although she has had to stop due to her disabilities and health issues. Depending on what state you live in, some states DO take your estate if you die intestate.  I checked into that recently, however, and I think that mostly applies in states that are Commonwealths.  That is the case in VA and KY, which are both Commonwealths, but not in NE.  After my daughter died, I had to revise my will and advanced living directive.  Find out what the policy is in your state.

              • Judith M. Green,

Thanks for all your support and great advice.  I have not checked into the North Shore place yet, I was told that they help with people and dogs in my situation.

There is no one close that I know of who would take care of my dog if something happened to me, although a few were interested in how much money would they get if they took him in.  He would probably be put down right after they get any money.

This week I'm rewriting my will and plan to check into Maryland's estate planning policies so that I may include provisions for him - however I hope that I will out live him and/or get an advance warning to make arrangements for him before something would happen to me.  He will probably be my last dog I'll ever have.

Thanks for all the great advice, and I definitely will keep your kind and generous offer in mind.

  • Going Rogue,

Yeah, can you feel the love?
