Do As I Say, Not As I Do: Obama’s Failure To Act For His Own Family

“I am my brother’s keeper.”

President Obama proudly made this declaration while on the campaign trail in Vermont.  Though this mantra is essentially the basis of Obama’s presidency, it is a far cry from the truth: Obama is not his brother’s keeper.

As I indicated in an article a few months ago, the president has a habit of setting a standard he is unwilling to live by.

George Obama, President Barack Obama’s half brother, resides in Kenya and is living in severe poverty.  George lives in a dilapidated shack in a Nairobi slum and earns little to no money at all.  When George’s son became ill and had to be admitted to a hospital, he contacted Dinesh D’Souza, an Indian American conservative political commentator, author, and filmmaker, and sought financial help in order to cover his son’s medical bills.

D’Souza provided him with the money.  When D’Souza asked George why he sought his help, George’s reply was, “I have no one else to ask.”

George is brother to a multimillionaire and the most powerful man on earth.  Why didn’t the president see about his brother?  Why didn’t he become his “brother’s keeper?”  How can Obama, in good conscience, lecture the American people about values and “looking out for one another” when he has yet to see about his own brother?

In an effort to defend the president, many point out the fact that George struggled with a drug and alcohol addiction.  D’Souza knows George Obama well, and he does not try to deny it.  As a matter of fact, it is not a big surprise.  Research shows that poverty-stricken areas have higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse and gang activity; take a few of this country’s most dangerous cities as an example: Detroit, MichiganBaltimore, MarylandCamden, New Jersey.  I personally have firsthand experience with Camden, New Jersey, as I hail from this city.

While George Obama is not an innocent man (I do not think any of us are), his past does not—and should not—serve as a reason why Obama could not lend a hand.  After all, if you are going to instruct Americans on fairness and helping the less fortunate (America is the most charitable nation on earth, by the way) then the president should be leading by example.

The president’s motto, “do as I say, not as I do,” has been in effect for quite some time.  Zeituni Onyango is another one of Obama’s relatives, another one he refused to help.  While then-Senator Obama was on the campaign trail for the presidency, we discovered that his aunt was here illegally.  Not only was she here illegally (even after she was asked to leave twice), she was also on welfare, living in public housing, unemployed, and reaping the benefits of our health care system.  I know what you’re thinking: how on earth did she survive our wretched health care system.  Or, as one of Michelle Malkin’s contributors so eloquently put it: “I won’t bother to ask how a poverty-stricken person (and an illegal one for that matter) could have possibly been hospitalized and apparently successfully treated pre-Obamacare, back when the poor were left to die in the gutter.”

Obama, of course, tried to distance himself from her.  When asked about his aunt in a 2008 interview with Katie Couric, Obama claimed that she should be deported back to Kenya, because her being here illegally is, well, illegal, and a violation of our laws; but once again, his actions did not align with his words.  In 2009, she was invited to attend Obama’s swearing-in ceremony, in addition to the inaugural ball. She attended both events.

In a 2010 interview with Boston’s WBZ-TV, Auntie Zeituni unashamedly declared that Americans are “obligated” to help her.  Taxpayers—the 53% of us who pay taxes, anyway—have been helping her.  Her nephew (she often refers to him as “my child”), on the other hand, has not lifted a finger to help her in any way.  As a matter of fact, in the interview she even states that she had been living in a homeless shelter for a few years.  I was under the impression that Obama’s failure to act on his aunt’s behalf was strictly reserved for the rich, racist white men in the Republican Party.

President Obama’s aunt has since been granted asylum.

In both cases involving his brother and his aunt, President Obama has single-handedly annihilated the basis of his campaign: Americans need to have each other’s backs, and making sure everyone has a “fair shot.”

What it comes down to is, the president is willing to spend everyone else’s money but his own; even when it comes to helping his own family.  Despite his claims, President Obama is not his brother’s keeper.
