  • I have been married for 40 years live in North of Boston have health issues neighborhood is fair to good but I have experienced an attempted break in to my house. My neighbors called the police with a response of15 minutes while the kids were checking my house out. After that I have been considering a gun.

  • Hi Thomas. Why settle for just one? Opinions vary. This is like asking "What's the best flavor ice cream?" So, my personal preference, a handgun with which I am comfortable and familiar. For me, that's a .40 cal Ruger, with an extended magazine (14 rds.) loaded with Remington Golden Sabre jacketed hollow points. Close at hand, I have a very reliable SKS equipped with a 30 rd magazine, loaded with 154 gr soft points. Two more 30 rd mags sit in waiting and 100 rds on stripper clips. Oh, an extra 14 rd. magazine and a 9 rd. magazine ready to load into the Ruger. The Ruger goes everywhere with me, because the SKS attracts too much attention. There are some others here, but, those are the 2 that sit closest.

The good answer is, whatever you're comfortable with and will be effective, if needed. If a .45 or .40 is too much recoil, go with a 9mm or .380, but, I wouldn't recommend anything lighter than that. If you're good with the recoil, consider a 12 ga shotgun. I personally don't like the recoil of them, so,I don't have one. It's as personal as your favorite color, Thomas. Find the one you like and practice 'til you can shoot nickels... in the dark.

    • Do you have any links to compare what you are playing with?

  • Damn. Missed that you're in Boston. Just having a gun will land you in jail, Thomas. Have you checked the legalities of this quest?

  • Are you aware of mass S.1126 -- Senate’s gun ban?

    Now what.!!

  •  I am a normal person living in mass law abiding citizen looking for information on how I can legally own something I can get to protect my family and possessions. I am for the 2nd ammendment. Before Obama I never thought of it. But since his insistence on removing the right to protect my family and possessions as well as his stomping on all of our rights, this is my reason! :O

  • I have been prepping for the last 3 years! And trying to get proper information about my concerns! :-*

  • Thomas, You say you are 62 years young and have back problems. Is it safe for me to assume that you are either currently retired or that you are getting very close to doing that? I am originally from New Hampshire, my sister still lives in Hudson Mass. I live in Texas now. Unfortunately Massachusetts has some of the strictest anti-gun laws in the nation. The liberal main-stream-media will never tell anyone this but Massachusetts still has one of the nations highest crime rates in spite (or because), of they’re anti-gun laws. The first thing I would suggest is to retire and move to a southern state that will allow you to defend your self and your family. If you like the four-season changes in the weather, Oklahoma is one good example. Just be aware, do NOT bring any democratic liberal philosophies with you. Leave those in the back-bay or southy area.

Second I might suggest a Rugar 380 caliber pistol, or something similar in size. This is a fairly small handgun and is easy to manage and handle. But it has enough stopping power to make anyone either stop dead in their tracks (literally) or make a speedy exit and a trip to the emergency room. The reference to 6+1 refers to the capacity of rounds it will carry. 6 in the clip and 1 one the chamber. The recoil is very minimal and even your wife could handle it.

The draw backs, This model 380 is very popular and ammunition can be scarce. Rugar is not the only manufacturer of the 380. But spend your money wisely, don’t go for price alone, go for the quality first.

I am also going to recommend that both you and your wife take a short training course with a licensed and qualified professional trainer. I would recommend this even if you did serve in the Military, (40 years ago). Your wife probably did not. When you eventually purchase a weapon such as the Rugar mentioned above, be sure to also purchase several hundred rounds of ammo. You will use a minimum of 200 rounds in your training.

Here are some internet links that you may find helpful: Use these links for information only, buy from a reputable dealer only. Hopefully one that can help you with that training also.
Good luck my friend, be safe.

    • Thanks again for your help. You have been honest with me. I have grandchildren in Chelmsford and I might be able to move to nh. I have been considering selling and then moving to a city in nh. Do you have any suggestions? My son's family lives here because they have Boston jobs! Thanks again for your honesty!

      • Tom, I lived in Chester, NH. Chelmsford I think is closer to Nashua and Hudson NH. Route 3 rather than route 93.  Also Salem area may be ok. I would not necessarily recommend Nashua any more. It's become over populated for my taste. Pelham area may be a safer bet. Plastow is right above Lawrence MA. and that may not be any better than Boston. If your not apposed to a little longer drive Windham, NH is not a bad area. Still less than 50 miles from Chelmsford. If you prefer city life then Manchester is still pretty civilized.

Before moving to any area I suggest you check local laws on owning weapons. Not all cities and towns in NH are amicabile to owning and possessing guns, although most are. I'd also check the voter registration logs to see if you are moving to an area that is compatible with your political beliefs.

You may be one of those people who have always voted democrat just because you always have.
These birds are NOT your father's democrats.
