Lima, Peru (CNN) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the buck stops with her when it comes to who is to blame for security ahead of a deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.
"I take responsibility" for what happened on September 11, Clinton said in an interview with CNN's Elise Labott soon after arriving in Lima, Peru, for a visit. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, was the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions.
"I want to avoid some kind of political gotcha," she added, noting that it is close to the election.
The attack killed Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other Americans at the consulate.
The Obama administration has been heavily criticized after Vice President Joe Biden said during last week's vice presidential debate that the White House did not know of requests to enhance security at Benghazi, contradicting testimony by State Department employees that requests had been made and rejected. Following the debate, the White House said the vice president did not know of the requests because they were handled, as is the practice, by the State Department.
Clinton also sought to downplay the criticism that administration officials continued to say the attack was a spontaneous product of a protest over an anti-Muslim film, a theory that has since been discarded.
In the wake of an attack, there is always "confusion," Clinton said. But the information has since changed, Clinton said in the interview.
The secretary of state also described the desperate scene in the State Department during the hours of the attack on the night of September 10. It was an "intense, long ordeal" as staff tried to find out what had happened.
Clinton said her mission now is to make sure such an attack will never happen again -- but also that diplomacy, even in dangerous areas like Benghazi, is not stopped.
"We can't not engage," she said. "We cannot retreat."

Being the gambler that i am i can only wager that hubby bill had something to do with her admission of facts to add more confusion in attempts to protect the traitor in the WH. I,m more apt to believe a story i read that ovomit orchestrated the whole thing of kidnapping ambassador Stevens,hiding him for a couple days then here comes o-stupid to play hero.Unfortunately things went wrong when the muslim brotherhood hired the 4 or 5 stooges who botched the whole thing. No insult intended to the 3 stooges; The report apparently came from a soursce very high up in Washington. I also can guess that the clintons will probably be depositing a big chunck of change in their banking accounts.
Anyone else (a republican) would have already been fired.
I have to wonder if this might not be a subtle attempt on the part of the Clintons to sabotage the obozo campaign. This kind of admission along with the statemet that "Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions." kinda gives her an interesting persona...llike she has the info to make these decisions and he does not....just sayin! And she has plenty of reasons to detest odumdum, so I have to wonder what her intentions are here....should he be impeached...she might be aligning herself for succession. I hope Romney catches this point and runs with it tonight.

The buck cannot stop with Clinton. Basically, she is a nobody and she knows it. She works for obama so the buck stops with him. Besides all that, let me ask a question. What does it mean when somebody says, "I take full responsibility?" So what. Does that mean she will hang herself, lose her job, pay millions to the families, What?
In the military when one said they take full responsibility, they were demoted, transferred, or something worse, courtmartialed and sent to jail. So, what is going to happen to Clinton now that she has said, "I take full responsibility?"
Of course not...she also stated that now is not the time to place blame, but rather to find the people who did this. Come on, give poor Haggary a break!
So much more Lies by the entire Administration. Only reason she would take the blame is to save the NWO thats being shoved down our throats. Americans better be prepared to fight for their futures. She had to be threatened like everybody else in Washington as nobody has the Courage to take on this Worthless Idiot. God Help Us !
She has a daughter...using the classic muslim techniques of coercion, I'm sure her daughter has come up in conversation. She was probably told she has to take one for the boys or risk the life of her daughter. Plus, today is Boss Day, isn't it? She's giving her wonderful boss a nice gift. This is NOT to excuse her in any way shape or form, by the way.
Hillary is right when she says she takes responsibility for the lack of security and she needs to be held accountable for her part in this crime. But she is wrong to say that the buck stops w/ her. Where is our commander in chief?
I wonder why did Hillary make her statements overseas? has Hillary or Obama or anyone from this adm. come on tv to speak to the American people? has anyone heard any expression of grief or sorrow or outrage about how this was allowed to happen? It just strikes me as odd that our Sec. of State would make such a statement in a foreign country when not a word has been spoken here at home to Americans, not even from our Pres. or did I miss it?
It would not surprise me if Hillary does not make it back from Peru.
