So, you are walking out of a store and look up and see what looks like a very bright meteor running north to south. The "meteor" continues to burn and disappears from view over the roof line of the store building. Seconds later, a tremendous flash can be seen from that direction. You have seconds to react. What do you do?

  • Return immediately to the stores restroom, croach down on the sme wall ttat the toilets are on( thinking if this is the load bearing wall.(Shopping Centers). If a large ditch is avaiable, go in it if the ditch wall is facing the ligth direction of the light disappearance and coverup.

  • Notify emergency immediately.

  • How many "seconds later"?  What to do varies, depending upon whether it's five, ten, fifty...

If what you have seen is, indeed, a re-entry vehicle with a nuclear weapon, it will have been moving at several thousand miles per hour; even at the [relatively] low speed of 5400 miles per hour -- which would depend upon re-entry angle, type of weapon, and several other factors -- the device will be moving at the rate of 1.5 miles per second.  In general, the advice of Mr. James is correct.

The most important thing to remember is DON'T LOOK IN THE DIRECTION OF THE EVENT!  If the early fireball should be within your field of vision in the first few seconds after detonation, you will probably be temporarily (possibly permanently!) blinded by what is happening; a nuclear detonation creates a very energetic area which emits a LOT of light, many times brighter than the sun, along with lots of other EM and particle radiation.  Being blind, even for a few minutes, greatly reduces one's chances for survival.  Face away from the event and cover your face and, especially, your eyes.  More cover is better.  The light is so bright that one can see the bones in one's hand, through closed eyelids while facing away from the event, if he is close enough.  "Close enough" varies with the weapon's yield and the timing of "the look".

Get into any sort of place which will afford you some shelter -- more is better.  Start counting in your mind, "One thousand one, one thousand two..." and so on until you hear the very first sound, which will be like a very low-pitched roar which will begin some time after the flash.  At this time, you will have counted to some number; divide that number by five (If you need a calculator, you're gonna die!) to roughly determine how far away the detonation occurred in [statute] miles.  For instance, if you were able to count to fifty-five before the noise -- which will last a long time, like thunder on steroids -- the detonation was about eleven miles away.

Very soon after you hear the noise, the blast wave, which travels at the speed of sound after its initial formation, will sweep over you.  Depending upon the weapon's yield, your distance from the event, atmospheric conditions, and several other factors this blast may seem to be anything from a momentary blast of wind to an all-destroying "hit" which crushes the life from you, not unlike God's own hammer.  If you are close enough, the "outgoing" (direction, not "friendly"!) blast wave will shortly be followed by an extended wind in the opposite direction, caused by the atmosphere around you rushing in to fill the void left by the ascending fireball.  At this point, you have been subjected to double jeopardy:  The blast has destroyed a lot of the things in your area, blowing them outward like a dynamite explosion but millions of times more violently; the return picks up all of this debris and hurls it, like a "zillion" spears and clubs at very high speed, toward the event (in the opposite direction).

The best chance for survival finds you underground or in a substantially reinforced concrete structure at the moment of the event.  Failing that, get yourself into any sort of protected area as soon as you witness the event; more protection is only better.  Try to get yourself into a position with the strongest things between you and the event, with the "next-strongest" things between you and the direction directly away from the event.  Keep yourself low (smaller target for "debris missiles"), and try to keep your wits about you.

I don't mean to be a salesman, But Cresson H, Kearney's book, Nuclear War Survival Skills, should be in the library of everyone who expects to survive the coming holocaust.  We can all see the world heading toward this disaster, and it has been prophesied repeatedly in The Holy Bible.

May God (and "The Force"!) be with you.

  • Back into the store and find something like a table, high backed chair anything that you can lie down beside so that if the roof falls on you, the object will withstand that load with just enough space for you to survive without being crushed,.  You will not have time for using your cell to call the authorities or anyone else.  If within a few moments you do not feel the shockwave, get up and get on your way home (presuming you can start your car) and begin to implement your bug-out or stand your ground plans.  The Flash could have been one of several things such as the meteor that blew up and injured several in Russia a short time ago, an EMP Nuke which would not cause a severe shock wave, or a Nuke which would cause a shock wave as well as untold destruction. Take no chances,  go with the worst possible scenario unless and until you know what really happened.

  • Make sure all the women and children are cared for then seek shelter

  • I know that many consider it heroic to take care of women and children first. However, there are enough women that are on this site and others that should be preparing just like men. Women need to tend to the children while men who are much stronger physically can be used where physical strength is needed. Women are not to be dismissed in a catastrophic situation. They can take control of many situation such as comforting and giving aid.
